7 sauce gloppy, foil not appealing.
12/25/2012 09:20:37 pm
Definitely illegal foreign object (foil) in box. Would ask table captain to get ruling from contest rep.
12/25/2012 10:42:29 pm
Pork looks messy and too much sauce. That said, the foil throws it out. I'm sure it's a dq!

6 Not appetizing at all. Looks scary. First box I have seen without greens.
12/26/2012 12:10:24 am
meat looks good, foil is a DQ

KCBS this would be a DQ because of foil. Judging it regardless, the sauce is uneven. I'd give this box a 7.

6 This is a mess and the sauce is a disaster.

Foil = DQ.

Pretty dark looking meat there. It looks like I'd be tasting your sauce instead of your pork. I don't see the small amount of pulled adding anything to the box.

Meat looks mushy. Way over sauced. Overall not a very appealing box. DQ for foil if a KCBS event.........5

6 - I would like to say the meat looks good enough to eat, but I can't see it! If this were a sauce contest, this box could be a winner. The meat is well-placed in the box but there is way too much sauce.

5 - obviously this is not a KCBS box...I hope. If it is, it's a DQ. In any event, the meat looks dry and lifeless to me.
12/26/2012 03:16:14 am
If this was a KCBS turn in may be DQ'ed for pooling of sauce.

7. A mess o'pork. Underexposed picture makes it a bit difficult to judge. Looks a bit dry and uneven saucing.

Score 1 - I wish I could judge this box, but disqualified because of the aluminum foil.
12/26/2012 04:42:53 am
Though initially I would score a 4 due to poor presentation, I would recommend disqualification because of foriegn object (foil) in the box. Also, I am concerned about the pooled sauce on the meat.

Foil garnish is a DQ in my BBQ association.

1 - When did foil become an approved green to turn in.

7 probably too much sauce. Have not seen much aluminum wrap instead of green leafy garnish.Looks more like takeout at a 'cue drive through.
12/27/2012 01:04:05 am
8 the foil does not add to the presentation. The appearance of the meat looks pretty good even though the pic is dark. There are different cuts of the meat. I would like to try the different cuts.

Meat looks good, garnish is a no no. Afraid the rep will dq and we will have to give a 1 for illegal garnish and foreign object, foil.
12/27/2012 12:18:28 pm
7 - looks like the sauce was just plopped on there

7. Too much sauce. It hides the meat. The foil in the box would receive a 1 from the KCBS Rep.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
