Pork looks appetizing but the presentation is poor. Good looking bark and meat looks moist so I'll give it an 8.

9 I would love to take a bite. Nice clean box. I like the presentation and the center part looks really tender and juicy.

7 Meat looks appetizing, but garnish is too thin. Meat should be raised up more in the box. Hard one to judge.

9. presentation appears sparse, but the meat looks great.

9 looks fine to me. moist but not too saucy.

Score 7: Not a very attractive or appealing arangement in the box; irregular sized and arranged pieces, looks greasy.

8 - the pulled pork appears to be a little dry. The ends should be more consistent is size. Overall, look pretty good.

Nice bark. The pork looks juicy. The Money Muscle looks grate but the layout is out of balance. Needs more meat in the box.and better placement but still an...................8

8 - Meat looks moist, nice bark, Is that flat leaf parsley?
Not a great garnish. More uniform sizing of chunks showcases the meat.

Pork looks really good. Don't care for the placement 8

6 - this box reminds me of a bad Bridge (the card game) hand...aces and spaces. The MM scattered around the edges is offputting to my eye.

Not appealing to me, 6.

Score 9 - Well appointed box of pork

Nice looking pork box. Might look better with more chunks around the pulled. A solid ring of chunks would look awesome. I'd give this an 8.

Scott - KCBS CBJ

Torn on this one. Pulled pork looks moist and enticing. The burnt ends size, cut, and placement don't add to the appeal. I'd say a 7.

pork looks very good, juicy etc. but the box builder is trying too hard to be artsy fartsy---seven and the meat LOOKS like a ten

Not perfect, but dadgum appetizing to me! All looks moist. Pulled and MM look good, not really sure about the extra chunks around the outside.

Larry MCBJ
1/16/2013 08:53:04 am

I'll give a 9 bacause the meat looks so good.

I'd suggest perusing the pulled pork turn-in boxes already judged by MCBJ/CBJs here. You can see the scores, too!!

8. Pork looks moist. Scattered about. Perhaps split up the large gathering of chunks in the front to better space the chunks around the box.

I know we don't judge garnish, but you might want to consider using additional garnish to raise the meat in the box for presentation purposes.

Beautiful, glistening, very light sauce, perfect bark, meat-focused presentation - easy 9.

I really like this box. I think some judges might have an issue with the garnish being a bit thin looking but I try not to look at that. The meat looks awesome. A word of caution tho...loosely packed boxes have a tendency to not make it to the judges in pristine condition. I think you might reconsider the chunk placement.

very nice mix of cuts, I prefer to see a little sauce

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

9 - Interesting placement but well done! The meat looks delicious: moist but not over-sauced!

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Pretty lite looking box. Meat kinda looks scattered about. Good looking bark, would use pulled chunks vs. cut chunks. Kinda makes you think it wasn't done enough to pull so you had to cut it into chunks. Pulled pieces look inviting.
I score an 7, slightly above average.

Sugg. Clean up the sauce on the side of your box, also your bed of broad leaf parsley (Cilantro?) is pretty weak and sparce looking. It doesn't frame or make your entry pop.

8 - Very good box. I'd use the parsley to "elevate" the samples a bit more. Pulled looks nice and moist, and that is some great looking bark. I would cut the slices a little more evenly, too. Arrangement in the box is a bit awkward, but the meat looks good.

9 here
I love judging unsauced pork. This looks juicy and the bark has great color

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC

Score: 8
While the pork looks moist and there is nice variety in the cuts offered, there are several inconsistencies in the presentation. A little more precision and this could be a 9.

8 looks tasty, not a lot of smoke ring that I can see. chunks look dry

Seaton Hall

Score 8. If this box had more bark on the pulled pork in the middle, it would be a 9. I like the chunks and money muscle slices.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
