9 - Love a mustard-based sauce. I'd give it a 9 if for no other reason than the cook had the courage to submit a different sauce.

7, maybe 8 in person. Box is nicely arranged. However, it looks so wet I wonder if it was soaked in a flood.

Please take your photos from the judge's point of view.

7 pulled looks mushy, sauce dots on outer rim, color appears yellowish

7 - the oily shine is not appealing

Pretty fair looking box. All the parts are there but the finishing sauce is bothersome, looks more like a gravy. Sloppy sauce on box, it does matter. This is just barely above average, so 7.

7 Generous selection, nice cutting, good pulled portion, all ruined with sloppy sauce application.

8 - nice - not a fan of the sauce color.

Score = 8: Sauce on slices is uneven.

Comment: Good meat shouldn't need a sauce. Might have been better to leave the sauce off the slices all together.

8 looked great until I saw a blob of something on the slice in the upper left of the box which hurt the score.

Score 7. The color of this entry (meat or sauce?) is a total turn off to me. I also not a fan of the finely shredded pork in the top corner of this box.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

8. May be lower in person. Bark is nice. The pulled looks chopped and the sauce seems to be too heavy.
Suggestion:
Herb, I assume you are still taking the pictures, turn the box 90 degrees and present from the vantage the judges would normally see the box.
Careful when you present multiple presentations (sliced, pulled, etc). All meats need to be equal in quality otherwise you will receive a lower score than your best presentation.

Frank, No, I do not take the photos. All box photos are submitted by the cooks themselves.

8 - Looks over sauced to cover up dry meat. Is this a mustard based sauce?

Garnish is optional, but if you are going to use it, it would really help this box if it was more evenly distributed around sides.

Presentation is pretty bad. THe chopped pork looks scrambled. The money muscle need more attention

Good variety but they ruined this box by being sloppy with the sauce. 7

Appearance 6, Possibly a 7 in person. Color not appetizing (maybe camera issue).

SCORE/REASONS: 6.5 Too white/yellow. Nice smokey ring on mm, but pulled pork and pieces do not look appetizing

5......About the only positive is the bark.

At first glance not a very appealing box. Bad color, not sure if its sauce or gravy on the meat. Slices not lined up. Dirty box. Take the time and place the meat in the box with care.

Green tint decreases the appetizing factor considerably! Looks moist (maybe even slimy!)
Looks jumbled and not carefully laid out in the box.
But the color!!!

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/comment 7 slices look uneven the chopped pork looks like its mushy or over cook

7 Sorry but the color is really unappealing. Also, I'm not sure if its sauce or aus jous on the meat but it gives it a greasy look. The variation of the top piece of money muscle to the bottom one is really big as well. I appreciate folks that put in all three cuts but make sure they all look good.

Score 6 very sloppy box, I would have tried to downsize the pieces of meat so that the meat in the front of the box was not covering the garnish and touching the box. Congratulation on choosing a pork butt with such a huge money muscle.

5 - The presentation is unappetizing and does not make me want to eat the meat. The color is way off and looks yellow. The chopped meat looks just like, I don't know what it looks like. The rest of the meat also looks over sauced. The money muscle could me placed in the box better so the pieces are spaced more evenly.

Suggestion - If the sauce is a mustard sauce, which I do like, use it sparingly so it does not color the meat a yellow color. Place the meat so the pieces are lined up and the spacing is better.

Appearance Score: 7
Maybe an 8 in realtime. The sauce / glaze is distracting from your really nice looking pork.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
