9 - Looks great. Right amount of sauce, good bark.

7; The meat, generally, looks good. Box layout is a bit distracting and has a schizophrenic feel to it. The photo itself is fuzzy & probably not from the judge's angle of view. The placement of the MM is good, but the chopped and the meat in opposing corners, while proabably intended to make for a balanced appearance, actually do the opposite IMHO.

8, maybe a 9. Looks tasty

Just not making me want to jump right in. Slices are ok, pulled is ok, chunks are not inviting really. Front of box is sloppy with sauce.
I think you did slightly above average, so 7.

8 - if the large piece on the top was not there, it would have been a 9

Bill F

8 Lots of character in this box, but be careful with the sauce, otherwise this is a 9.

score=9 good box

Doug Master CBJ & CTC

Score = 8: Sauce is uneven on the meat.

Comment: If you are going to sauce the meat, make sure it covers the meat evenly with no bare spots. Also there is a big glop of sauce on the pile of meat in the bottom left corner with some sauce on the box. Judges are told to ignore sauce on the top of the box as it make have been caused by moving the box to the table. In this case the box probably hasn't been closed yet. It is attention to detail like this that will get you nines in appearance.

9 looks great! Picture off color though.

Score 8. Nice looking entry. I would suggest that the team consider not placing the chunks in the top area of the box. This would allow better layout of the balance of the meat and still leaves plenty of meat in the box. More is not always better.

7. Picture not framed correctly. Nice bark. Sauce looks very thick and uneven. Not sure there are 6 chunks. Careful on multiple presentations. If the quality is not the same you will receive a lower score than you would with your best opresentation.

Score 9 - Looks good and it is all there, slices, chopped and ready to pull. I like pieces that I can pull to see how well it actually pulls.

8 Unbalanced arrangement. Meat looks good, not big enough pieces as opposed to money muscle and pulled/chopped.

no body put much ayyention to greenry. Kinda makes pork look un invitablr.
Money Muscle looks great allaround 8 maybe 7 if I were there

I can't tell if there's enough chunks (6) in the box. Poor saucing. Otherwsie the bark looks tasty and slices look good. 7, maybe an 8.

Appearance 8. A slightly different arrangement might show off all samples better.

SCORE/REASONS: 8. Looks great, but doesnt look like there are enough pieces of the type of cut in the upper right corner. Pulled pork looks messy. Nice color on the exterior of the cuts. A little too saucy.

7 at best....Nice bark. Meat looks moist.

To much going on in the box. Sloppy uneven sauce. The chunk of meat on the top right doesn't fit in. Dirty box...may be pooling on the left corner. Take more time and do it right.

POOR Photo (color), doesn't help the appearance of the pork, but seems to be "very good". Looks moist and I like the variety of types of meat, but looks rather thrown into the box without too much attention to detail.

score/comment 9 good color nicely glazed looks good to me

7 The box is relatively sloppy. Two big things to watch. I hope its just the pic (kinda hard to tell) but be real careful saucing. The sauce on the pulled is so uneven that it might get called out as pooled and I can only count three chunks (prolly more underneath). Some folks might call this box out to the table captain.

Score 7 nice enough box however, it doesn't look to be 6 pieces of chunked meat. Glaze on the meat is nice but I would be sure to give enough meat to all 6 judges. Or 5 however many is at the event.

7 - the pieces at the upper right appear to be dry. There seems to be only 2 pieces of meat in the upper right which is not enough for all the judges. The whole box is red and, to me, does not appear natural.

Suggestion - Use less sauce to cut down on the red color. If there are only 2 pieces of meat at the upper right, make sure, if you are going to put these cuts in the box, there is enough for all the judges.

Appearance Score: 9
That's some purty looking pork. Having the three (3) options is always appealing.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
