7
Just not appealing

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
6/10/2013 03:04:35 pm

Score = 7; meat appears like it could be tasty, but the placement of it seems rather sloppy, not reflective of an effort to make it look great.

Suggestions/Comments: Take more care in placing the pulled part of the meat so it doesn't look like it was plopped in the middle of the box without much effort.

8 Good potential but the photo lighting and focus is poor, not sure what I'm seeing.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
6/10/2013 03:11:56 pm

Score/Resons: 8 - pulled looks good, chunks looks dry.

Suggestions: Put a finishing sptitz to add a glisten to the meat.

Seems arranged to look like a bird's nest. Would that be sculpting? If not, it's rather gimmicky. Hard to tell from the picture but I may ask the contest rep to have a look. If it's not DQ'd for sculpting, I'd say 7 based on the appearance of the meat.

Score - 8...Box is not organized that well.

Suggestions - better organization of meats would tend to highlight them more effectively.

7 - pulled meat looks dry (could be photo), circles of pulled pork and chunks are not a pleasing presentation, somewhat confusing to the eye, like that some chunks with bark are included. I think rows of product uniformly placed are more pleasing to the eye

8. Not the best picture to judge by

9, nice selection of meats, burnt ends look great

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
6/10/2013 11:35:54 pm

8, possibly a 9 in person. Meat looks moist and not too much sauce. Clarity of the picture doesn't let me see how the chunks look and whether there is plenty of the pulled sample.

Chaz D

Score/Reasons: 8 a lot of the issues I see might be caused by the pic but your chunks have crust up on some and down on others and make it appear uneven. Nice box design tho!

Suggestions/Comments: Not real sure how to fix that uneven look short of being careful to lay all your pieces in with the bark facing the same direction. Also there is a little hunk of bark resting in the middle of the pulled that (in the pic anyway) makes it look like a hole in the middle of your pulled portion.

Pic is too bad. 'Can't see enough to judge.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
6/11/2013 01:11:11 am

Score/Reasons = 8, may be lower in person. Picture too dark too judge accurately. Color looks good but it appears that sauce is heavy.

Suggestions/Comments = Work on the camera skills.

score=9
excellent and interesting looking box.

Lorne Rae
6/11/2013 01:31:25 am

9. Nice circular arrangement. Nice color shade mix. Look moist. Less pulled pork in middle might better highlight the circular layout in a category that is very hard to box attractively.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
6/11/2013 02:14:18 am

Score/Reasons: 9; Meat looks like it is cooked to perfection with a nice mix of shredded and chunks of bark.
Suggestions/Comments: While the photo is dark, the box still looks very appetizing. Good job!

Score/Reasons = 7 might be the pic, but the ends look a little over sauced while the pulled pork looks a little dry

Suggestions/Comments = use less sauce and moisturize the pulled pork with collected meat juices

Tom, CBJ PNWBA

7, The chunks around the outside look like they were just thrown in. If seen live they could have scored better.

Score = 9, An example that you do not need slices of money muscle to present a great looking pork box.

9 - Excellent. Bark looks good, and I like how you served many different parts of the butt.

Suggestions: None.

9...Good color and bark on the chunks. Lightly sauced. Pulled looks a little dry but not enough to deduct a point.

Any suggestions would be nit picking.

Score/Reasons = 8, nice looking chunks, presented well.

Suggestions/Comments = some bark mixed in with the pulled may make it more appealing.

Full box, that's a plus. Nice arrangement. I'm really likeing the chunks with bark, pulled does not impress.
Very good 8.

Glenn - KCBS CTC, CBJ

7 - I would like to see a better angle of the box of looking down more. Box looks very unorganized as if the meat was just thrown in. I'd recommend a little more time spent placing the samples in a more symetrical looking arrangement.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook

Score/Reason: I would score this box a 9. Looks juicy and moist.

Suggestion: I would not change a thing.

Score/Reasons = 8 a little messy. chunks look great. circular arrangement ok, but needs to be tighter. pull could use some light sauce or color.

Suggestions/Comments = clean box top? could of happened in transit

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score/reason 6 looks dry, looks a little burnt, and messy

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
