Score = 7

Pieces look moist. Nice bark and smoke ring on the slices. There could have been chopped put in as well.

8. Second slice from the left looks odd

David - CBJ/KCBS

Score - 8 - sliced in back looks very dry and skin is coming off several pieces. Pulled looks good. Good color and moisture

9, pork appears moist and there is a nice bark on the sliced pieces, box is very inviting looking, makes me want to take a taste

Pete KCBS

Score 7 - looks good. Would like to see more bark in the front and cleaner cutting in the back.

8 - Even though this box is neat, a box that is full will often time will receive a higher score. Nice bark on the medallions but they could have been arranged better to enhance the visual appearance.

8....Meat looks moist. Nice bark on the M/M. The money muscle cuts are ragged and the bark could have been pushed back on top of the slices.

More bark in the pulled pile might improve the looks and taste.

a 7. Nice placement and good layout. Look moist. Bark on slices looks ragged.

7 - No WOW factor. More green than meat here.

Lee Tilton CBJ
7/7/2013 02:40:57 am

Score = 8 Meat looks moist. Nice slices of money muscle.

The slice second from left should have been put on the left end so the irregularity of the slice would have been hidden.

score=8
might use a little more inventive display, the meat looks good

9 A great looking box.

Little skimpy, but what's there looks pretty tasty. The slices look like they are pretty overdone to the point of falling apart. The pulled looks nice and moist.
I see a above average 7.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS

7, possibly an 8 in person. Not sure if there are 6 slices or not as it's hard to see. Presentation isn't very good.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9, nice color, appears lightly glazed and moist.

Suggestions/Comments = Try to keep the MM slices a bit neater.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
7/7/2013 06:13:08 am

Score = 8; Slices look a little sloppy to me. Bark is peeling off and the are not uniform enough. They also look dry.

Bill KCBS MCBJ/CTC
7/7/2013 06:35:50 am

Score/Reasons: 8 1/2, so it's a 9.

Suggestions/Comments = I'm not sure what to make of the second piece of sliced pork on the upper back row. Perhaps take more time to present the slices in a more uniformed manner.

Score/Reasons = 8, meat looks moist and enticing; nice color on the pulled and medallions; however, medallions need to be trimmed better.

9 - looks moist, like the bark, and appreciate the option of thick slice and pulled. Gives a sense of tenderness to the eye. Yum!

Tom KCBS CBJ

Nice looking meat but unfortunately the electric knife left unsightly marks on the meat and tore the bark off losing points 7

Steve R - KCBS CBJ

Scored a 7; doesn't look like there's much meat there to judge. Cannot tell how many sliced pieces are on top from the picture.
Would suggest larger portions in future. The pork in the center does look nice and moist however.

8 Nice balance Love the pulled pork. A little more neatening up of the slices and the one piece that looks like all bark looks a little out of place.

Suggestions/Comments......
Loved the leafy lettuce for a change, and very nice looking.

Score/Reasons = 7, The money muscle is not evenly spaced in the box. Also, the area on the upper left appears to have very black piece of meat.

The pulled pork has different sizes of pieces.

Suggestions/Comments = Take the time to evenly space the meat in the box and use pieces that appear the same. Also, true with the pulled meat. Make sure the pieces are the same size.

Doing this will show the judge you have taken the time to present the meat that is pleasing to the eye.

Score/Reasons = 7, pretty average looking contest box (which is above average for BBQ). Looks pretty moist, but the slices are too dissimilar and the pile of pulled is lacking any POP or WOW

Suggestions/Comments = Lighten up photo so we can see better! Arrange pulled pile so that ends with bark on them are obvious and not so jumbled up.

Tom, CBJ PNWBA

8, possibly 9 if more product would fill the box. Nice color, slices could be more uniform.

Chaz D KCBS CBJ
7/8/2013 08:07:22 am

Score/Reason: 7, The slices really killed your score. The bark is peeling off and they are uneven and strange ripples where your electric knife cut thru.

Comments: I would have avoided the slices altogether. The pulled is excellent looking and would have scored an easy 8/9 by itself.

Shawn-KCBS CBJ and Comp Cook
7/8/2013 09:13:19 am

Score/Reason: I would score this box an 8. Pork looks nicely presented and very moist
Suggestion: You may want to put more meat in the box if you can.

Dan KCBS CTC, MCBJ

8 pulled looks good, mm looks overcooked and cuts are ragged

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
7/9/2013 02:48:00 am

Score/Reasons: 9. Lighting in this photo is not great, but the pork looks to be moist and done well.
Suggestions/Comments: Good job of presentation and nice consistency of product.

Jeff KCBS CBJ
7/9/2013 04:03:46 am

score/reason 8 color looks good, meat looks moist, money muscle could be arranged a little straighter making the box look better

9- Awesome pork entry. Appears moist, looks appetizing.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
7/9/2013 01:27:18 pm

Score/Reasons: 7 - Pulled looks appetizing, with good color. MM slices have great bark, but appear dry; slice arrangement appears to be in a bit of dissarray particularly the left half of the row.

Suggestions/Comments: Add some moisture to the face of your slices and a spritz to the pulled.

Matt KCBS CBJ
7/10/2013 01:50:01 pm

Score/Reasons = 8 - bark is coming off the money muscle slices, but the pulled looks moist and juicy. Good color on the bark. I can see knife marks on the MM slices, too.

Suggestions/Comments = Do something different when cutting the money muscle - maybe a sharper knife?

Glenn KCBS CBJ, CTC
7/12/2013 12:59:02 pm

7 - I'm assuming there's 6 samples of the sliced pork but ts hard to tell. The meat looks appetizing but its not the neatest slicing of an entry I ever saw.

Bobby Whitefield
7/14/2013 01:52:42 pm

As I look in a turn in box, I want the best meat to catch my eye first. The pulled pork is attractive although it could be pulled more to provide smaller pieces for display. The money muscle appears to be an after thought which is not well presented in the box. Pieces are not uniform and the bark could stand some more work to make the meat more presentable. The pulled pork appears to be moist and succulent whereas the money muscle appear dry. I would probably give the box a 6 on appearance but it looks tasty.

Steve R - KCBS CBJ
7/24/2013 12:03:00 pm

Sorry, but had to give this box a 6. It appears that there was not much effort in putting it together; the pieces across the top are not uniform and i cannot tell from the picture how many are really there. Should be more pulled pork in the center for all judges.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
