Score = 8

I love the look of the submission. The pieces look moist and uniform and I would love to try this to determine if the it is good as it looks. The only knock is that there are only slices that are submitted in this category and no chopped or pulled.

Score this box a 9! Nice, even slices and good bark on outside. Would love to make a sandwich!

Nice looking slices but the moisture appears to have been brushed on as opposed to being a result of the cook.

8 looks good although such large slices are unusual for me.

would like to see pulled, sliced and chunk as offerings.

I give this box an 8. The meat may be under done from the amount of fat visible, But it looks like I want to pick it up and try it. Lettuce could be cleaned up some.

The pieces look pretty uniformily cut. The have a shiny appearance and are not too heaviily sauces. Unfortunately there are no burnt ends.

9- Awesome pork entry. Appears moist, looks appetizing.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 9. Slices have nice bark and are lightly glazed.

Suggestions/Comments = Neaten up the garnish and clean up the sauce drips. Let the meat sit on top of the garnish rather than nestled in for a better presentation.

8 - meat color looks very good as well as box arrangement.

The brushed on finishing looks a little overdone and is not very even. It is splattered around the garnish even. With a little more care, I think this would have been a 9.

Score/reasons = 8/Although an unusual selection of meat it is pork and looks great. The sauce could have been cleaned up a little more!

Suggestions/comments = Putting sliced pork in a traditional pork competition is a little risky because some judges aren't all that open minded; seeing the sliced pork could give the impression the butt was not cooked long enough. This doesn't have to be true of course.

8.....Good bark. Nice even slices. Meat looks moist.

Appears to be undercooked. Top slice doesn't match the others.

Score 9. No reason to explain this score. This is a great entry.

Comment - I am used to seeing pulled pork as part of the pork entry. The slices look like ham instead of pork butt.

Score/Reasons: 8 - While it's nice to see a box of nice looking sliced pork, there's a certain almost undefinable "pop" missing from this box. Maybe it's the sideways layout of the meat, maybe it's the mis-alignment of several slices, particularly between the gorup of first three slices against the remaining slices, maybe it's both of those things.

Suggstions/Comments: Turn the row of slices to face the judges and tidy/even up the way slices lay against each other.

8 Very attractive box.

Can't help but think this is a tad on the tough side.

I really like the appearance of this one. Meat looks very appetizing and not over sauced. Glad to give a 9.
Side note: I do think there's a bit too much garnish, but that did not affect my judgement of the entry.

9 - One of the best looking box of slices I've seen.

I would score this box a 9.

Suggestion: it is nice if you can show different cuts, but judging by the meat that was turned in, it looks great!

Score/Reasons = 8 - Could have chosen slices that were more uniform so they would line up better. The meat looks like ham, but I like the look of the larger slices.

Suggestions/Comments = Choose slices that are more uniform.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
