Score = 7. Pork looks moist but nothing grabs your attention. A little more attention to presentation would have helped this box a lot.

Score/Reasons = 7
Judging strictly on what is IN the box, (as we should) the meat looks a little dried out and not much bark for flavor. Would like to have seen slices included.

8 looks good but kind of plane.

would like to see samples of chunk, slice and pulled.

I give this box a 6. This may be the best tasting meat in the world. But it reminds me of a buffet line were the meat came out of the refer and was just dumped into a pan. Makes me want to just say , Next.

The chopped pork looks delicious. A nice neat unifrom presentation. Not too much sauce. Unfrtunately there are no burnt ends.

5 - looks moist, but totally unappetizing.

8- Very good looking pork box . Nice looking chunks. Appears moist, not heavily sauced.

Score/Reasons = 9. It can be tough to make chopped pork look "excellent" but this one works. It appears nicely cooked, juicy and evenly chopped without appearing mushy. Hope it tastes as good as it looks!

Suggestions/Comments = None

8....good looking pork. Looks moist. Nicely chopped.

Needs more bark

12/5/2013 01:15:31 am

Score/reason = 9/The meat looks very moist and gives the appearance of being tender and delicious!

Suggestions/comments = Not a fan of the placement of the meat; it looks like a big chocolate chip cookie, or a cow pie! be careful of gimmicky presentations that could be perceived as sculpting or marking.

8 - Nice colors, the meat looks very good; however, not up to an excellent or a nine in presentation.

Jeff T - CBJ/KCBS
12/5/2013 02:30:55 am

Score 7. Meat looks moist and makes me want to try it. Lots of nice colors in the meat.
However, it looks too packed down. Spreading and "fluffing" in the box would have utilized space and presented better.

Score = 8, Nice looking pork, looks a little dry to me from the photo.

Comments: Even without the garnish it is hard to make a mound of pulled pork look appetizing.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ
12/5/2013 02:51:20 am

Score/Reasons = 9, color is good, meat looks moist

Suggestions/Comments = I actually appreciate the lack of garnish, but it didn't make me rate it higher than if it had been in a nest of greens

9 now that is lovely ! Love the bark running thru !!!

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
12/5/2013 05:33:55 am

Score 7. Reasons: I do not understand why a cook would take all of the time to carefully season and smoke a pork butt/shoulder and then chop it to pieces. I can only believe that the meat did not come out as the cook expected or this is just the lazy way to present and serve the meat. I would never take the time to prepare a roast and then use meat cleavers to chop it to pieces. Not an attractive presentation and I don't believe it will be a tasty one also.

Score = 9

Comment = Nice color. I would add a little more of the bark to the top side and a tad more sauce to make it 'pop' a little more.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Pork has a good color and looks moist. No, this is not sculpting.

Comments/Suggestions: I wouldn't change a thing.

7 Chopped is good.

As an FBA judge, I would advise to hide bottom of box with
extra chopped or pulled pork

Certainly a "different" look here, but it's on the positive side. I'd like to get this at my table sometime. = 8 =

9 - This looks as good as you can make pulled pork look. The lack of garnish may be a turn-off to some judges but it is optional and we should not take points off for no garnish.

I would score this box a 7.

Suggestion: spread the meat out. This reminds me of a meat loaf. The texture does not look appealing.

Shawn Higgins

Score = 7

I like the chopped but the presentation is very limiting with regard to submitting a total picture of the category. I would have probably scored it higher if there was sliced and pulled in the box as well. Nice to see the bark and moistness of the pieces. Too bad...it's only chopped.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
12/10/2013 01:40:49 am

Score/Reasons = 6 - the way the meat is just pile up does not make it look appetizing. The meat looks like the canned hash and is presented like one finds in a school cafeteria.

Suggestions/Comments = Include some large pieces of meat to bring some "character" to the presentation.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
