7 - odd looking. colors are too different. bottom is too dark.

8 initially because pic very dark
I would probably go 9 f2f, like the layout

Score/Reasons: 8. Over-sauced

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
1/22/2014 01:30:19 pm

Score/Reasons = 8, Maybe lower in person. Less sauce on the chunks could move this to a 9. Appears a bit dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Consider trimming the tail off the money muscle so the judge can see a slice.

Score/Reasons=6, the large chunks smothered in sauce really turned me off. They struck me as odd at first glance. The barky chunks or slices in the front look more appealing but I would like to see the side of one.

Suggestions=smaller chunks with some bark and less sauce. Shingle the slices so the inside of the meat is visible.

Larry MCBJ

8 - Chunks appear over sauced and I can't see the MM inside meat.

7 - Product has to much sauce; more appealing presentation could have been offered.

9 - the chunks may have a pinch too much sauce - but that isn't stopping my mouth from watering...

8 two of the pieces look small and the piece on the top right looks off color and just plain weird. rest of the meat looks great!

Score = 8, possibly a 9 in person.

Picture distorts the color and number of pieces....hopefully the sauce isn't really that color.

Score 9
The cook felt very confident in his/her use of the Money Muscle with burnt ends. Not too much sauce either. Looks good enough to eat

7-The way the top pieces were cut and placed in the box lowered the score. They look jagged. Also the color is a little off putting.

Matt KCBS CBJ
1/23/2014 12:14:47 am

Score/Reasons = 8, I like that you turn in good sized pieces, and the MM looks nicely cut. I gave an 8 because the sauce looks a bit over caramelized. Might be a 9 in person.

Suggestions/Comments = None.

I give this a 9. Make me just want to dig in.

Score/Reasons = 7 Looks a little dark, but could just be the lighting. sauce may be a little heavy. Fingers seem to over power the muscle.

Suggestions/Comments If using garnish, care and detail need to be applied. Even it out to frame the meat.

Score/Reasons =7, the color is not very appetizing. Way too red. Also, it appears to be only five chunks of pork. As a judge, we can not touch the box and therefore, can't tell if there is meat under the visible pieces..

Suggestions/Comments = A little sauce is OK, but the red (salmon) color needs to be used sparingly, in fact, I would suggest not using this color. Use some of the cooking juices over the meat to make it moist and naturally looking. Also, when placing the meat in the box, make sure at least six pieces of meat are visible.

Score/Reasons = 8, POOR PHOTO! Wanted to give a 7, but I think that it is mainly the darkness that led me to that. Not the color that makes pork appealing to me! Oversauced?

Suggestions/Comments = LIGHTEN UP the photo!!!

Nice presentation, but too much glaze for me. Pieces appear overcooked, but perhaps not. Would enjoy sampling this box. Probably a 7 or 8.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Box Score 7, Picture Score 4. The reason for the box score is the meat is again over coated with sauce and I am not a fan of placing a burnt lot in front of the entry. Not appealing.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score=8, The pork looks a little too dark for me. That might be from the poor light in the photo though. Also sauce is too heavy.

9 nice color and bark

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Comment: 7/While upon in-person inspection may reveal something different, the meat looks unappetizing and incomplete. There are chunks at the bottom and different chunks at the top, neither of which say, "you must try me!"

8- A pretty box. I like the layout, very attractive. Pork looks a little over sauced. I might think it was a little over cooked. It may just be the lighting that makes the bottom pieces a little dark.

8- Very good looking pork box . Nice looking chunks. Appears moist, not heavily sauced. A little dark around the edges.

Scrolling the picture down I was very excited to see the huge chunks of pork goodness until I got to the dog turd offering in the front. Please do something to break up the shape, move it to the back, give it an arch shape, something.
Besides that I'm wantin to get at it.
Still can only go very good 8.

8....Nice bark. Even sliced money muscle. Chunks are equal size. Over sauced.

The green area between the money muscle and chunks in the middle left is distracting and makes the box look out of balance.

Comments: I really like the idea of this box. The meat looks great but it sauced pretty heavily for my taste. Nice idea not sure how all judges will react tho.

9 - Very nice looking box. Meat looks perfectly sauced and juicy. Great color & bark.

DJ Martin KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 6 Can't see what the meat looks like under all that sauce. Way too much sauce added after the cook.

Score 8 - Good color on the pulled pieces, with nice edges of bark showing. Just a bit oversauced. Center piece should be pulled down in to box so it has not put sauce on box and sits on greenery. Money muscle looks good. Good try and almost there.

I would score this box an 8. Some of the meat in the box looks very dark.
Suggestion: shred some pork to give the judges 3 different choices in the box.

BBQ Critics: Compare your scores with other judges. Have fun and learn for ways to improve your scores. If you are way off from the average of these scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
