Score: 7 box nicely arranged. cook took the time to identify the money muscle and present it along with pulled chunks. however, meat appears dry. Here, dare I suggest, garnish would have helped the meat appearance. It does not help that the image presented is small and not properly exposed...

9 - This pork looks darn good! I probably would have wiped off what looks like a couple heavy blobs of yellow sauce, but that's not gonna keep me from a 9 here.

I give this one an 8. The gap between the sliced and the pulled give an odd look.

Score/Reasons = 8, poor picture but giving the cook benefit of doubt. Can't tell if there a bit too much sauce in some areas, but meat has nice bark and appears moist.

Score/Reasons 7 I had a difficult time with this one. It's kind of sloppy and not sure what that piece of green matter is but it still looks juicy and appetizing.

Score 8. This is a nice entry of pork, but I don't understand the odd color of the small object on the pork and also there seems to be some of the color father back in the box. Is this a flaw in the sauce or a foreign object in the box?

Score/Reasons: 8; This is an example of nice, juicy-looking pork, even though the photo is very shadowy. Looks like the box may have been jostled before or at turn-in, so it's not as tidy as it might be.

8 - Meat appears moist with a little bark on most samples. Color is slightly dark, but it may just be the photo. Nice

Score/Reasons: 6/This meat is decidedly unappealing and demonstrates a total lack of interest on the part of the cooker.

Score/Reasons: 8 - I like the rich maghogany color on this meat. I'll decide later whether or not it's juicy or dry. I believe the MM in back could be more carefully presented, but perhaps it was jostled in handling during turn-in. The presentation of the meat in front, to me, could have been given more care. There appear to be loose threads that simply were ignored and, because they're of different color than the rest of the pile, they stand out and affect the box's appearance more than they should.

Score/Reasons = 6, Not too appetizing to me, but can't say that it is below average; therefore, average at best. Chunks and slices look dry even with the sauce. 2/3/2014 05:27:25 am
Score/Reasons = 5 to 6 Muscle looks dry. Some fingers look like they are sauced others do not. Remove the connective tissue.

Score/Reasons = 7, The slices of the money muscle are not stacked up evenly. The pieces on the right are not standing up like the rest of the pieces. Also, the size of the slices are not even. The chucks of meat on the bottom are not very appetizing. There is fat on the pieces. It appears to be yellowish fat on the middle, slightly right, pieces. Also, there appears to be three tiny bones, but these could actually be strands of meat. This takes away from the appearance.

Score/Reasons = 7. Move the MM piece on the right under the rest so we can see the texture of the cut piece. The bottom pieces look too "messy". Remove the stringy bits for a better look. This box doesn't look very "put together".

BBQ Critics: Compare your scores with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-) Comments are closed.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site. SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only. SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions. Purpose
The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
