BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 good box

I would give this one a 7. Not very appealing, garnish does not help. Maybe less meat would have helped the looks.

Score 8. nice looking pork, I would have liked a little more care assembling the box and saucing the meat.

7 some of the chunks around the edges look moist because of the sauce

unfortunately the rest does not, could be the photo but is what I see

5 this box looks unappitizing and haphazardly placed

Score = 6

Presentation is sloppy, sauce is blotchy and pork looks bland.

Mike Cannon

7 - big glob of meat - needs organizing.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
4/2/2014 03:28:11 pm

Score/Reasons: 6, maybe 7; Pork appears to have been pressed into a bowl mould then dumped into the box. It's a completely uninteresting appearance. The bark pieces appear to have been tossed into the box with no effort being made toward carefully placing them.

Suggestions/Comments: Give this box some TLC.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
4/2/2014 04:17:35 pm

Score/Reasons = 8/Nice color on the pulled and bark, nice presentation.

Comments = I don't understand why the sauce is glopped on the pieces in the front; I can't see the meat underneath so how can I judge it?

Score/Reasons = 7, too much in box. Looks more like a pork box.

Suggestions/Comments = Spend more time arranging the meat.

8 - Appears slightly dry. Nice pork box.

Score 9
An interesting presentation with the pulled in the center and pieces around it. It looks moist and the prices are shiny.

7 - The pulled pork looks dry, not appealing at all.

Tom – CMJ/KCBS; CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS,NCBBQA & comp cook

Score/Reasons = 8, pile looks molded which detracts some appetizing apeal to me. Just lacks any WOW factor for me.

Suggestions/Comments = strive to have the pulled fluffed up a bit. Frame all the way around the meat with garnish.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
4/3/2014 02:00:41 am

Score/Reasons = 7. The meat and bark have nice color. The sauce applied to each of the chunks looks haphazard and the chunks appear dry despite the sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = If the pulled and the chunks are not of equal quality you will have a lower score than if you only placed the best style in the box.

BlueSmoke KCBS MCBJ/COMP COOK

5....The pulled look mushy. The greenish color is unappetizing. Sauce on the chunks is erratic. The meat is way over cooked.

Fixing the things in the comments above would be a big start on improving your product.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7: Sauce is uneven and looks sloppy. Looks like the pork was just plopped down in the box without much thought.

Tiffany KCBS CBJ/CTC
4/3/2014 02:19:08 am

8 - The meat looks good, there is just something unappetizing to me about a big pile presentation.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
4/3/2014 02:36:55 am

Never been impressed with a large pile of loose pork pullings, this does'nt show much skill. Neither does splashing some sauce on faux pork burnt ends.
Not much effort put out here. I in for an above average 7, but just average 6 is definatly in play here.

Lorne Rae

7. The layout is fine, uneven color. Look a bit dry and the ends are not evenly spread around the edges.

Larry MCBJ
4/3/2014 09:40:56 am

7 - Chunks missing sauce, pulled looks mushy, and even-up the box.

7. Bark pieces look very good, but the rest of the meat in the box does not look appealing.

Matt KCBS CBJ
4/7/2014 05:27:30 am

Score/Reasons = 7, meat looks moist, but mushy and overcooked, full box.

Suggestions/Comments = To me, this is not the most attractive way to present pulled pork.

jaja01 KCBS CMBJ CTC
4/8/2014 07:18:32 am

Score/Reasons = 7, The burnt ends are uneven is size. There pile of meat contains a variety of sizes also and it looks the meat is just piled and packed down. The sauce is applied unevenly.

Suggestions/Comments = Make sure the burnt ends are cut evenly. Lay the remaining meat is neat lines in stead of piling it in the box. Sauce the meat evenly.

Jason CBJ CSBBQA
4/8/2014 02:29:12 pm

SCORE: 6 - There is an abundance of pulled and that looks nice and juicy, maybe a touch too much so. The chunks around the outside of seem random shapes and sizes. There is also uneven sauce.

COMMENTS: A more uniform exterior ring with chunks that matched in shape, size and sauce with a nice mound of pulled in the middle would enhance the score.

7

Not the most appealing arrangement or display of the meat. It's sort of thrown in with some larger pieces around the edge with a little after-though sauce applied. It's not terrible, but it doesn't scream "must eat me".

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
