BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons = 8,nice arrangement. Meat looks fatty. not seeing any bark on chunks. looks too wet.

Suggestions/Comments = add some pulled pork

8 - Nice color, meat looks moist. However, there are 8 chunks and only 6 slices.............why?

Score = 9

Nice presentation. Sauce looks a little uneven but otherwise pork looks moist.

I give this one a 9

9. Meat could use a little more color, but great job!

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ/CTC
5/22/2014 12:54:17 am

8 - Placement could be tightened up a bit and in the pic it's hard to tell if the front slice has a big portion of fat or if that is just sauce sheen - but if it's fat, place a more attractive slice in the front.

Box looks very nice, The slices look moist and the Money Muscle on the sides is a nice touch. I would've liked to have seen them pulled. Score 9

8 or possibly a 7, money muscle looks nice, but the plugs look thrown in there, looks strangely shiny, may be just the picture.

If the parsley was a little more even on the bottom, it would help putting the plugs in some similar orientation.

Score 9. Great looking pork.

Nice looking presentation

8- The attempt at symmetry in the box did not have the intended effect; looks a little unbalanced. Meat has a nice color, shine and bark.

Comment- Perhaps adding some pulled pork in the box could raise the score.

8. Arrangement slightly haphazard.

BlueSmoke KCBS MCBJ/COMP COOK

7.....Meat looks under cooked. No "Pop" to the box. M/M could be laid out in a more orderly fashion.

Put a couple more chunks on each side to fill in the box. Get some color in the glaze.

8-meat could be a little neater on each side

Score/Reasons = 9, looks very moist, almost oversauced, but still appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments = don't leave the spaces on the chunks on each side (not a scoring factor, but it would look better)

9 - Appears moist and has good color.

Pros: Box is full and I like the symmetry of the arrangement. Meat looks moist. I would like to sample this entry.

Suggestions: OK, these mite seem picky, but you could have the perfect box of pork depending on the taste and texture. 1. The sauce on the chunk on the bottom left next to the slice "seems" to have more sauce than the others; could be the pic. 2. Try to display the slices more uniformly from back to front. You have nice smoke on the meat, show it off!

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
5/22/2014 04:40:17 am

Score/Reasons = 7/This may not be fair because the angle of the picture and light reflection could be a factor, but the first thing that jumped out at me is what looks to be a hunk of fat on the medallion in front. Otherwise, the box looks good.

9. Excellent and unique layout. Good placement. Look moist, even color. nice pattern.

9 Great Job! Like the shine. The pieces on the flanks could be more uniform and one has a different color than the others that could lower your score from more picky judges. - MCBJ

7 - Probably (hopefully) its the lighting but the meat looks slimy and the front slice looks fatty. Not very appetizing.

5/22/2014 07:05:39 am

Score/Reasons = 8, the slices need to be stacked evenly. Also, the chunks need to be placed in the box along side of each other and need to be cut evenly.

Suggestions/Comments = stack the meat neatly and place the chunks along side each other and they need to me cut evenly.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 9, Nice looking pork box

Comments: Sauce is uneven on the chunks. If you must use sauce make sure each piece is coated evenly and remember, less is more. We judges want to taste the meat first, not the sauce.

8 Sauce looks a little heavy on Money muscle.

Matt KCBS CBJ

Score/Reasons: 9; meat looks moist

Suggestions/Comments: Be careful with the quantity of glaze on the meat-

Ernie CBJ

8, the left and right side pieces are not uniform

Shawn Higgins
5/23/2014 08:30:53 am

Score = 7

The presentation is clean, color is little light but the glaze appears to be heavy. The bark on slices are OK..but the sauce is a little too heavy for my liking.

Score/Reasons = 8, may be a little too moist. Nice cuts laid in a way to see the slices from the side.

Suggestions/Comments = Nice looking box. Garnish looks good and is neutral, which is what you want. I think that the cubes should be lined up better. Good to have symmetry with four cubes on each side, and an attempt was made to make them mirrors to each other on both sides of the slices, but it just didn't seem to come together in the final appearance. It just looks unbalanced on both sides of the slices.

score 6 , not sure what that glistening stuff is on them put its not appealing, I wouldn't want to eat it

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
