BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score/Reasons = 7, show interior of meat slices. Slices looks too thin. Slightly over sauced.

Suggestions/Comments = fan out meat slices for better appearance. chunks look good.

9 - I like the look of the box altho the slices look a little dark, could be the quality of the photo.

Score = 9.

Picture doesn't help this presentation. Pork looks tender and hopefully not too much sauce. Nice sized chunks and good bark on the pieces.

I giv ethis one an 8. The sauce is too heavy, looks painted on. Greenery doesn't help, very random, and so is the large pieces of meat. Meat looks tasty, but everything needs cleaning up.

9. I like the idea of dipping one side of the chunks in sauce!!

Tony Graham
5/22/2014 12:32:22 am

8. MM slices are thin, which automatically makes me think it may be undercooked. The ends of the pulled dipped into sauce looks a bit awkward, but I understand what the cook is trying to do here. The horizontal piece of pulled at the bottom looks like it may have a bit of fat or gristle on it, not real sure what that is.

Otherwise, its not a bad box, I like to see big pieces of the pulled, that tells me the cook is happy with the "doneness" of the meat.

Tiffany - KCBS CBJ/CTC

8 - The meat looks good - but the slices could be 'fanned' out a bit to give them and equal symmetry with the tubes. It also looks like the tubes that don't have bark just had the tips dipped in sauce? I would just arrange the tubes to show off the bark if that's the case and not do the 'tip dip'.

Why did the cook try and hide the slices? From the top view, the meat looks to be ever sauced, the other pieces look questionable as to their moistness. Score 7

Score 7. I believe this box would present better if the larger slices were place on a slight angle, so the side of the meat is exposed. I also would like to see slightly less of the thick sauce coated on top of the slices.

Steve Amos

7, way too much sauce, 5 similar plugs and an odd piece, slices are just set in there.

The inconsistent parsley doesn't help to showcase the meat. Offset the slices a little to show some meat. I love bark, but with all of the sauce, it is not good visually.

8 Picture is to dark to see and judge meat on top. However, chunks look great.

Bark Color looks dark ? Could be due to photo. Would like to see more meat in the turn-in

7.....Money Muscle is over sauced. Chunks look dry. The sauce on the left piece is distracting.

Sauce all the pieces or none. Put more meat in the box.

7- Glaze/sauce appears too dark. Slices could be more uniform in size and the tubes could be arranged a little neater as well.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC

7. Looks like some of the pieces were dipped in sauce to mimic bark. The back pieces look over-sauced and it's hard to see the meat.

8-meat on bottom should be neater

Pros: Nice smoke on the chunks. Doesn't appear to be overly sauced. I would really like to sample them especially those in the middle; they look yummy! Dark pic, so hard to see the slices in back.

Suggestion: I know we don't judge on garnish, but in this case it draws the attention away from the meat with the uneven appearance in the back of the box. Lots of open space in the box, ergo, more room to put more meat! A little more attention to presentation and you could have a really nice box of pork.

8 - Color appears dark but could be the photo and/or the sauce. Possibly a 9 in person.

Score/Reasons = 7, photo is so dark that it looks like ribs on the top! Not crazy about the looks of any of the meat.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish could be better arranged, meat could be better arranged in the box, and that purple thumbnail polish doesn't help the appearance of the meat at all!!! (none of these were scoring factors!)

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reasons = 7/The chunks in front don't look too bad, but all I can see on the meat in back is sauce.

7. Look moist, Good layout. Arrangement looks haphazard even though there is a pattern. This detracts from the overall impression of the box.

8 Looks moist. Needs more uniformity. Garnish could be tighter. Looks yummy! MCBJ

7 - (Picture not the best) Not a very "organized" box. Money muscle looks like the ends were dipped in sause but do look like they would taste good. I'm assuming those are slices at the top of the box but they look very unevenly sliced and over sauced.

Score/Reasons =7, Even though the pic is rather dark, I can still tell there is way too much sauce and it really looks as if it would be extremely sweet and gooey. The chunks look to be a little dry.

Suggestions/Comments = use less sauce.

Matt KCBS CBJ
5/23/2014 02:02:00 am

Score/Reasons = 8, meat looks moist, albeit over sauced where the bark is.

Suggestions/Comments = Box looks hurriedly put together. I would take some time to trim those chunks and place them in a more pleasing fashion in the box... but that is just my opinion and didn't affect my scoring.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
5/23/2014 03:26:09 am

Score/Reasons = 7, based solely on the chunks. The picture is too dark to adequately judge the slices. The sauce looks a little heavy on the slices and the chunks look a little dry. It may just be the picture.

Suggestions/Comments = Fan the slices so we can see the surface. Neaten up the garnish - it's not supposed to factor in the scoring, but some judges will mark you down.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
5/23/2014 06:28:57 am

Score/Reasons: 7; Sections that can be seen appear to be rather dry with an over-abundance of sauce.

Suggestions/Comments: Photo quality is very poor and the meat is really hard to see clearly.

Ernie CBJ

8 - not uniform

Shawn Higgins
5/23/2014 08:36:06 am

Score = 7

The pieces look moist and the color is nice, but the sauce is really heavy and covers up any bark. The box is very limiting...meaning the the variety of the pieces could be better, which would show the judges if this pit master knows his/her way around the pit. Too bad...I would be interested in how it tastes.

8-- Sample looks good , money muscle sliced thin as it was would have presented better if laid more diagonally than straight up. I give the box a 2 blue thumbs up.haha

5/25/2014 02:23:48 am

8 but that's because I can't see what's in the back of the box. Could be a 9 if that looked good.

I like the chunks in front. Sauce on one end so you can get a sauced taste and an unsauced taste from the same chunk. They look moist too

I wouldn't fight somebody over it but I'd be more than happy to dig in!
A very good 8.
A little more of each meat and some housekeeping on the meat pieces and it's more towards a 9

Score/Reasons = 7, photo is a little dark near the top, but slices look too wet. Rightmost slice appears to be not cut even. More slices, or thicker slices would have made the row more appearing. No apparent attempt was made to line up the cubes into some semblance of order or a pattern. Garnish is uneven and detracts from the box.

Suggestions/Comments = More slices to fill up a row; line up cubes better and cut them more uniform or into a pattern. Practice on garnish to square off the box better.

Don Ousley

score 7, the slices look ok cant see the inside of the meat. The pulled pork looks very dry and the sauce on the tops draw more attention to dryness

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
