BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

7 looks dry

Dan KCBS CTC,MCBJ

7 appears dry and overcooked

GregG KCBS/MCBJ, CTC

8 - Pulled looks great. The chunks/slices don't appear to be as moist as the pulled.

6-money muscle? pieces not uniform, pulled pork doesn't look good either

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC
7/26/2014 09:38:13 am

7 - Solid box here with some variation in the size of the slices. The slices may have benefited from some saucing to make them look more moist. The pulled looks moist and inviting.

Jeff-CBJ

7 The dark pulled and gray money muscle doesn't look appealing

Enrico, CBJ KCBS

7
Money muscle looks really dry and uneven. No bark visible.
Pulled pork in the back looks moist.

7 - Looks dry, strange color, uneven slices.

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
7/26/2014 02:59:14 pm

Score/Reasons: 7 - The meat looks tired and uninviting. The pulled meat looks like it was simply dumped into the box. The slices appear raggedy and in need of some TLC.

Comments/Suggestions: Tidy up the pulled meat. On the slices, "86" the unsightly debris on the face of slices 1. 2. 3. & 5.

Not much effort put out here. Nothing makes me want to grab a piece immediatly. Slices look dry and bland. I don't give this much weight until taste and tenderness scoring, but it does give me pause.
I score this as average 6.

6....Meat looks cold and unappealing. Slices look dry. The two slices on the left side are different than the others.

Get some moisture on the meat. Dip the meat or spritz. Make a neater pile of the pulled.

The slices are not even and they dod not look shiny. The pulled looks delicious

Score/Reasons = 7, the meat is just blah, nothing interesting, no color and nothing to catch the eye and make me want to eat it. The meat looks dry and the slices are unevenly sliced.

Suggestions/Comments = Add just a bit of color and arrange the meat differently. Maybe sliced down the center and the pulled/chopped along each side. Add a bit of sauce to add some color and which caused the meat look moist. Ensure the slices are cut evenly.

Vern - MCBJ/KCBS

8 - Could have been a 9 but money muscle is not uniform and looks a little dry. Good job over all...

Score = 7

Jeff KCBS CBJ

score / reason 7 looks like it could be dry and not appealing in the color money mussel pieces look very un-consistant in there sizes.

7/27/2014 05:58:39 pm

Score/Reasons = 7, slices look dry and unappealing. Rest of box isn't in a pattern or form, so it isn't inviting.

Suggestions/Comments = Even up the slices. Looks like you were going small to large in design. Judges don't want to wind up with the runt of the litter. Also, make them a bit moister looking. Not bad at all and easily improved.

6. Looks dry and gray in color.

Tom - CMJ/KCBS;CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS,NCBBQA & comp cook
7/28/2014 01:43:03 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks a wee bit dry, but I like that it isn't oversauced.

Suggestions/Comments = a little better arranging of the pile of pulled would help overall impression. MM slices more similar in size would help too,

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
7/28/2014 02:29:59 am

Score/Reasons = 7. The MM looks dry.

Suggestions/Comments = Even up the size of the slices.

8. Nice layout. Good graduation in size of slices. However, look dry.

8 Sliced looks dry, but pulled appears more moist

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 5

Meat looks dry and no regard was given for sizing of the pieces. Almost looks like jerky.

The slice looks kinda dry (could be the picture). I like how you arranged the slice large to small. The pulled appears to be moist. I could maybe go up to a 9 seeing the box in person.

Appearance 5- The meat looks dry. It looks as if the slices have fatty striations in the meat. My CBJ class was taught by one of the best in the business. I'll never forget his ultimate saying "How appetizing does the meat look in its setting?" This does not look appetizing at all.

beth

I would rate this a 6. Looks dry, messy and un even

Mike, KCBS, GBA, CBJ

6- The meat looks dry especially the medallions. Lack of uniformed sizes and ragged slices detract from the score.

Jean

Sorry 6 is as good as this gets. Should have left out money muscle and used the pulled pork only. Money muscle was: 1. Cut too thin 2. Not cut in uniformed pieces. 3. Looks very dry, needs to be sauced.

7- Money muscle appears to be dry, and if you are going to use more than 1 money muscle for the sample, make sure they are proportionate in size. The pulled sample looks moist, but could be placed better in the box.

Score 7. Pulled looks great but the sliced money muscle has two big chunks a four smaller pieces. Sliced looks dry.

Raine® KCBS CBJ CTC Cooking Team link
8/4/2014 01:12:37 pm

Score/Reasons = 6 Just average. looks dry. MM, if that is what it is, doesn't look like it is all from the same piece.

Suggestions/Comments = Even out the garnish, if you are going to the trouble to use it.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
