BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

I would rate this a 9. good bark looks inviting to eat

9 - just the right amount of sauce

Lorne Rae
8/20/2014 04:28:56 am

7. Look moist. Nice layout. Layout appears uneven and knife skills on slices could be improved.

Score/Reasons: 7 - I like the box layout. Maybe it's the photo, but under/around the nice looking sauce/glaze, the meat looks very dark and rather dry.

Suggestions/comments: Consider backing off a bit on the cooking time and/or temperature and/or smoke.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score=7. Might be an 8 in person.

Can't really see for sure what the meat looks like.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
8/20/2014 04:42:10 am

Picture too dark to see correctly.
Sauced chunks look a bit sloppy but no reason not to call this a excellent 9.

Brad Greer

Score 9
Box is a little jumbled but it looks really tasty.

I give this one a 9

8 - Great looking pork box. Appears moist but not over sauced.

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC

8 - Very good looking box. The sauce on the pieces is inconsistent, perhaps take the time to make it like the slices. However the slices look very good, a nice sheen with a rich dark bark. The sauce may be a little thick on the leftmost slices, but this could also be the lighting. Well done

Larry MCBJ

9 - Nice box. Good color, even spacing, and appears not over sauced.

note: ... third slice missing bark on top.

Vern - MCBJ KCBS

9 - Looks yummy!

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, May be higher in person. A different look, but appears it could be very appetizing. Sauce gets in the way of the meat here.

Suggestions/Comments = none

Score 9 - Iooking good, meat sitting nice and high in the box, some may say the bark is overdone but it looks delicious to me. I want this for dinner.

Strong 8
Love the fullness of the box. Might be a little too much sauced. Also the front row, the slices need to be more consistent in thickness.

Enrico BBQness, CBJ KCBS

8 for me.
Box look good but it is too dark and over sauced for me.
MM looks crumbling and overdone. Not even sliced.
Chuncks in the back look over sauced .
Between the MM and the chuncks on the extreme right I can see something black with a triangle shape that is not sauced at all and looks like a splinter of bone. It will not be, but i suggest to remove or sauce it.

Score 9
Nice looking box. All the parts look delicious and inviting.

Score = 9, Nice looking box of pork. Great looking bark. Would be looking forward to tasting this.

Comments: Looks a little over sauced, but giving it the benefit of the doubt not to score it down.

Score/Reasons = 7, lacks a lot of the appetizing factor for me! Looks fairly moist, but sauce isn't evenly spread and is very heavy. Just not making me want some, but not too negative either.

Suggestions/Comments = lighten up the photo!

Score/Reasons = 8, looks good and color is good, but the slices are so uneven that the distract from the score

Suggestions/Comments = Get consistent slices in the box and you have a winner. I like the color of everything.

9......Nice neat box. Meat has great bark and color with a nice glaze. Even cut slices. Looks moist.

8 - I like the layout of the meat and there was plenty of bark, but I think picture quality was poor . Hard to tell a lot about it because it was too dark.

Score/Reasons = 9, the box looks pretty good. About the only thing is the about of glaze on the meat.

Suggestions/Comments = just cut back a bit on the glaze

7. Looks a little burnt and sauced to cover up dryness.

8 Nice looking box of pork. Better looking slices (more uniform)
would have made it a 9

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
