Strong 7 or weak 8 - Since I tend to judge on the side of the cook, it would probably be an 8. There's a lot going on in this box, when I first looked at it, it looked messy, pieces not uniform and too much sauce, but on the other hand it looks really good, made me want to try a piece.

Appearance 7- Maybe too saucy, slices unevenly cut, chunks should be cut even

Score/Reasons = 6, very moist, but not really very appetizing to me. Definitely looks oversauced, doesn't look like very much attention was paid to how it was placed in the box (slices off-center, pile of pulled plopped in the middle, bottom row not even).

I have never judged any entry in a black box. If it was not issued, I would disqualify it. The color causes the box to fade into the background and the green highlights the meat. I kind of like the black. Score - 9

Will skip over the black box with the sauce all over it.

Score 7. The variance in the size and look of the pieces and the very small amount of pulled does not make this an attractive entry. It appears that the cook might be a new cook and was concerned more about the layout of the box than the pork itself.

Good color, nice selection to offer judges. Needs more care in preparing turn in box, a little sloppy. A 7 or possibly 8.

8 - I have to judge what's there and it looks nice but needs more uniformity and meat. The sixth judge won't get a chunk and the pulled won't go very far either. Trim the ends of the money muscle and make slices thinner so you have 6 more even pieces...

Score = 8. Good looking pork box. MM slices look over cooked and falling apart.

7 - Meat appears to be tossed in the box. Sauce is applied heavier than needed ie..it hides the pork.

7 - The way it's falling apart looks overcooked, over sauced, and looks thrown together without attention to detail.

Score/Reasons: 8 - meat looks good, layout looks good, but the front row looks way oversauced to me. I want to taste meat that's not overwhelmed by sauce.

7- Pork is over-sauced, garnish is placed haphazardly, pulled sample is small compared to other cuts. money muscle showing fat and connective tissue.

9/9/2014 03:12:27 pm
7 - the money muscle cuts need to be more uniform in size and shape. The pullled pork in the middle of the box needs to fill out to the end of the row like the rest of the meats. The chunks need to be more consistent in size and shape. Nicely sauced. Prefer white box.

score / reason 7 color looks great, sauce looks good, overall placement just looks sloppy, sauce on side of box. not a usual kcbs box with being black, would defiantly bring that to the attention of the rep for a ruling

CBJ=Certified BBQ Judge EMAIL FIELD ON FORM: You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site. SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only. SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions. Purpose
The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
