BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 8
Somehow I don't like all of the burnt pieces on the pork. I prefer them on the side. Also not too much sauce

8. Looks like it is a bit burnt with that heavy bark. But still looks good to eat.

I would rate this a 8. I would add a bit of glaze to make it a bit more moist looking

9
Looks perfectly cooked, moist and tasty. Love the neat appearance of this box

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 9

Pork looks moist and tender and just enough bark. Nice entry!

8 - Nice box "o" chunks but...Pieces of bark should be more equal in size. Some look long, others small. Looks moist though...

8. Looks pretty good.

Deb KCBS MCBJ/CTC
9/26/2014 04:54:09 am

Score: 9 (Pardon me while I wipe away the slobber)

Suggestions/Comments: I can't think of a thing that would make this box any more attractive (unless we had "taste-o-vision")- nice job!

Tom - CMJ/KCBS;CBJ/MBN,NCPC,NCBS,NCBBQA & comp cook
9/26/2014 05:04:11 am

Score/Reasons = 8, looks pretty good for a full box of pulled pork, but the black bark detracts from the appetizing element.

Suggestions/Comments = even up the garnish (not a scoring factor)

John - KCBS / MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MIM Judge
9/26/2014 05:09:05 am

Score/Reasons: 7 - I love the full box, I love all those bark pieces, but I don't love that the meat looks dry and uninteresting (I hope it's the photo); but there's no sparkle & there's no "eat me now" character to it.

Suggestions/Comments: This box may need nothing more than a good spritz before the lid gets closed.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
9/26/2014 06:21:57 am

Score/reasons = 7/The wad of bark on the left side looks burned and the meat doesn't look appetizing. There is no balance of color in the box.

9 - Nice bark and it looks juicy.

8 - Chunks with a great bark. Appars moist. Nice looking pork box.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
9/26/2014 11:09:31 am

Nice full box of well cooked pork. While thinking the bark is a little too overdone, I bet it's full of flavor.
Very good 8 here.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Nice color, full box, looks tasty!

Looks a little mushy however, have to see in person.

Erle Smith, KCBS CBJ & CTC
9/26/2014 03:14:04 pm

7 - Good Entry. This box has a generous amount of pork pieces that feature both dark bark and juicy meat. The arrangement, while solid, doesn't distinguish the entry from others. Not sure what to suggest to you, perhaps a little more variety in piece selection?

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Score = 7: Pork looks greasy or has way too much sauce on it.

score / reason 6 looks ho-hum nothing about this box pops, i see nothing more than an average box.

Wayne KCBS/CBJ & Backyard Cook
9/28/2014 02:41:09 pm

Score/Reason = 8 (possibly a 9 in person). The arrangement, color and moistness are very good. This makes me want to sample some. The amount of bark is heavier on the left side of the box.

Jean CMJ
9/28/2014 03:30:10 pm

8 - good amount in the box, however, the bark is very dark. Sauce is not evenly applied.

jaja01 KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/29/2014 12:03:24 am

Score/Reasons = 8, The ratio between the ends and meat looks to be uneven. The ends tend to make the whole box to be over done.

Suggestions/Comments = Suggest the amount of ends be reduced and ensure they are incorporated more evenly.

9.....nice bark. Good color. Meat looks moist. Fairly even sized chunks.

Dipping the chunks may give you a more even sauce job.

8- The pork looks moist and juicy, nice, thin saucing but too much bark. The bark on the left side of the box presents an uneven appearance.

Perhaps add some MM slices to improve the appearance score.

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC
9/30/2014 04:10:24 am

Score/Reasons = 7, Meat looks good with a light glaze. Bark appears to be a bit too much dark char and overwhelms the box.

Suggestions/Comments = none

Steve Rounds

Appearance-8- Because I'm looking at a picture, I'm giving it an 8. The darkness of the bark in real life would tell me if the pork was over done or burnt. It looks appetizing in the picture, another reason for an 8. Taste-For burnt bark, and Tenderness-For mushy over done pork will tell the rest of the story for this entry. If this were my entry, I would not turn in any dark bark pieces, so as to not give a rogue judge the reason to give a bad score for burnt bark without tasting it first.

Homer

The meat looks dry and the crust looks burnt, 7 or 8.

Bob CBJ/KCBS
10/3/2014 08:03:07 am

Score 9 Looks very moist. Hope the bark was good and not a burnt taste.

Achu
10/3/2014 09:34:35 am

Score/Reasons = 8, although the box looks okay, it just doesn't woo me into a higher score.

Suggestions/Comments = Lots of bark, which is good and makes me look forward to tasting it. The layout could use some improvement and could lead to a higher score.

8 - Although I like bark in the pulled sample, there is too much in this box making it look busy. Also pork looks over-cooked.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
