BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 9
I love the look of the pulled pork on top and the chunks on the bottom. They are not overly sauced, and the pulled looks good enough to eat

Mike Cannon

8 - a little pale

Rocky/ CBJ

9. Nicely laid out in box. Makes me want to eat it, which is the whole point of appearance.

I would rate this a 7. I would turn the parts that would show bark so they all can be viewed

Mary

8
The meat looks perfect. I'd prefer only one kind of garnish, rather than 2.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8

Pork looks moist and tender but the color seems a little off. Might not be enough shredded pork for all of the judges.

Vern - MCBJ KCBS
9/26/2014 04:31:32 am

7 - Needs more smoke, heat, sugar to form a nice bark. Try for more uniformity in the chunks.

Score/Reasons: 9 - Nice, attractive pork box. It looks lively, appealing and says "dive in, Pal, I'm delicious."

Suggestions/Comments: Some judges might quibble that they want darker bark, but since we are supposed to judge what's in the box rather than mark down for what's NOT in the box, I wouldn't change a thing.

7 - The meat in this box does not appeal to me. The pulled is too stringy and the bark does not look flavorful. Too red and not dark.

GregG KCBS/MCBJ, CTC

8 - Appears moist. More time spent on the arrangement would make it a bit more appealing.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Nothing terrible. Just don't want to fight anybody to get at it.
Above average 7.

Larry MCBJ
9/26/2014 01:29:03 pm

9 - Nice, full box. Not a fan of the color however, with the use of lighter, milder woods the color/taste could be lighter.

Taste/tenderness will tell.

Erle Smith: KCBS CBJ & CTC

8 - Very Good Entry. Well done, I like the two presentations here. The pulled looks perhaps a little dry - but it could easily be the picture. The chunks offer a nice contrast, show good bark and some effective saucing. Good Job

Score/Reason = 8, This is a very good pork entry. I like the overall arrangement, the pulled meat looks moist even without the use of sauce. Although I like the color on the chunks, their placement could be more organized, the two pieces on the right side are not in sync with the others.

Jean CMJ

9 - great looking box. Pulled pieces look nice. The shredded meat looks nice and juicey, not dried out.

Score/Reasons = 9, the box looks good. Not much to say about it. Like the placement of the meat and the color. You let the meat show through and stand on its own, not slathered in sauce.

Suggestions/Comments = As stated above, not much to say. I like the box.

Appearance-8-Very appetizing box. Pork doesn't look dry, in fact looks very moist.

I like the color and the meat looked moist. Without tasting the pork, i would give it 8 or 9.

Score/Reasons = 8, nice assortment, color, layout.

Suggestions/Comments = Shape isn't there. Maybe slice the pork chunks more evenly so that the first few judges don't leave scraps for the last judges.I see three nice chunks that I'd go after and the rest don't have any bark.

william holladay (SCBA)

8- Pulled sample needs to look moist, and the color of both samples look pale.

consider adding some bark in your pulled sample, and put a little more pulled pork in the box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
