BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 9 - I hope the taste holds this up. I like the way the meat was presented and sufficient quantity.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8, possibly 9 in person

The box looks a little busy and color is off...hopefully it's the photo.

Tom KCBS MCBJ

Decent looking box not sure why two types of sliced and cubed pork are in the box. I would suggest that the long stringy less flavorful pieces like the one in the top left center of the box be left out. Unless a team is confident they have a superior product why include three types of meat or three chances for a lower score?

I would rate this a 8. It looks inviting. I might want to change some of the pieces inward so it all aeears to be evenly cooked

Steve Rounds

Appearance-6- Nothing is uniform. Appears to be just thrown in the box. Sauce does not look appetizing. Pieces look dry. A 6 may be too good for this box.

Mike Cannon

6 - color uneven everywhere. not neat either.

Enrico BBQness, KCBS CBJ

8. To me the meat in center looks overdone. This is why is just 8.

7. Not much thought put into the box. Doesn't have that "pop".

Score/Reasons = 9, not perfect, but doesn't have to be.

Suggestions/Comments = completely frame the meat with the garnish. The two chunks in the front look out-of-place - not needed.

Nice looking box and great looking meat. It would get a 9 from me.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC

Score 8. Reason: this entry box just looks confused, overloaded, and like the cook did not how to present his best meat.

Hank KCBS/CBJ
10/31/2014 11:08:42 am

Score=7
Slices & pulled appear pale color which is not as appetizing to my eyes. The arrangement for me is a bit discombobulated and uneven.

Wayne KCBS/CBJ
10/31/2014 12:39:31 pm

Score/Reasons = 7. This is an above average box. The amount of pork is very generous and for the most part it appears to be moist. The contrasting colors may look better in person, but the two rows of dark colored cubes themselves are not uniform in color or shape, and the three-sided frame of rectangular slices is distracting.

Score/Reasons = 6, a lot of bland is there.

Suggestions/Comments = It just doesn't grab me. Looks okay, but it's not one of those that I can't wait to taste. Looks contrived. Not a natural artistic-looking layout. Practice your symmetry.

Score/Reasons: 8 - nice box of pork, but it looks dry.

Suggestions/Comments: Sptiz it to give it some shine and eye appeal.

Pork box 190 (8)
Box looks good, meat looks very good and moist. Not dazzled by the meat arrangement.

Ed KCBS MCBJ
11/1/2014 03:17:48 am

Um, looks dry and over seasoned, I fear all I'm gonna taste is your post cook seasoning not any pork. the barked chunks look good.
Why break the slice and put the jagged end in view? Not a good look.
I see average 6.

Greg - CBJ/KCBS
11/1/2014 05:08:11 am

Score/Reasons = 9, the pork looks moist and delicious

Suggestion/Comments that do not affect my score. I personally felt like the outer perimeter slices did not have the same quality appearance as the chunks and pull and seemed to clutter up the box a bit.

Keith - CBJ/KCBS

8 - Chunks and pulled look good. Slices are distracting.

william holladay (SCBA)

7 - Sample appears to be dry. Not sure what the cook was trying to accomplish with this presentation. Doesn't look appetizing.

Larry MCBJ
11/1/2014 02:38:38 pm

8 - The outside framing of this box look good, except the missing top pieces. The blank spot on upper right wants meat.

Jean CMJ
11/1/2014 06:16:36 pm

6 - this box seems to be very disorganized. Like even you did not know how to arrange it in the box, You started but just gave up. Can't put my finger on what it needs it's just this is not it, pour out start over.

Doug KCBS Master CBJ

Score = 8: Color on the two cubes in the upper left & upper right corner are much lighter than the rest. Sauce looks a little uneven on some of the slices on the perimeter.

Comments: Unique layout. I'm sure it will get everyone talking. I don't think it looks neat enough to score well consistently.

Score 8 Very nice layout of the meat. The slices around the edge of the box appear they may be a little dry.

7...Very cluttered box. Goopy sauce on the slices around the edges. Cubes have a nice bark. The chunks look dry and unorganized.

Cut back on the amount of meat. Make a more neat and uniform presentation. Spitz the meat before closing the lid.

Oh man is that some South Carolina mustard based BBQ? What a beautiful sight, brings a tear of joy to my eyes. I've been judging for about 8 years and sadly, mustard-based is rare on the KCBS circuit, which is a crying shame. Easy 9 for me, not based on my personal preference but just because that's some great looking pork.

Vern - MCBJ KCBS

8 - needs more symmetry and reduce gaps between samples...

Frank KCBS MCBJ CTC

Score/Reasons = 8, may be higher in person. The picture color seems a bit off and unusual presentation does not enhance the meat.

Score/Reasons = 8, definitely a box full of pork! Appears to be moist with nice color.

Suggestions/Comments = Almost too much meat! Consider reducing amount. Box also appears to be in chaos. Consider re-arranging so like cuts are together.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
