BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Score 7 - If I were to guess, this is a first time cooker. Not pulled very well and not enough chunks for judges to see how it pulls.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8

Good looking box but it just doesn't grab your attention....maybe a little more bark showing in the pulled pork?

Appearance-9- Everything in this box looks very appetizing. Very well arranged. Looks very moist. Nice thick slices on the MM.

7 - liked slices, but pulled is pale and unmemorable.

Score/Reasons = 9, don't see anything wrong with this box. Looks dad-gum good!

Suggestions/Comments = try to de-pile the pulled a bit so it doesn't appear blobbed.

Just looking at the picture without seeing it in person, I would give it a 9. Makes my mouth water.

Score=8

Pulled pork appears pale in the photo

Wayne KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 8. This is a very good looking box. The slight yellowing of the styro indicates the white balance on this photo is off a hair, but the color of the evenly sliced money muscle still looks very inviting (it should look better in person). The pile of pulled pork appears moist, but the two pieces with bark throws it out of balance and is the main reason this box is not a 9.

Comment - Some bark within a pile of PP is fine, provided it's placement is balanced.

Pork box 191 is (8)
Looks very tasty, moist, and a nice contrast of colors. The bark looks great as well

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Slices look delish, want one. Varience in widths is noticeable.
Pulled is less impressive, while it could be said it looks moist, my first thought was "slimey". Half the judges would not get to sample your bark. Is that wise?
Very good 8, but above average 7 is in play.

Score/Reasons = 9, very nice looking pork slices, juicy and mouth watering good

8 - slices look good. The pulled looks moist but maybe mushy.

9 - This is a good sample, money muscle sliced uniformly and pulled sample looks moist. good presentation.

Comment - Although the sample is a 9, consider putting a little more meat in the box. All that green is a little over-powering.

9 - Nice color, looks moist, neat presentation. I'm hungry!

9 love money muscle, looks once, plenary of slices. The pulled pieces, I think I would add more pieces with bark to have more contrast between inside and outside meat. Otherwise very neat box

9.....Money Muscle has a nice bark and color. Evenly sliced. The pulled appears moist.

Cut the ragged piece off the right front slice. Maybe add a little more pulled to help fill the box.

8, money muscle looks real good, the pulled part could use a little more color from say more bark or smoke ring or both.

Rick CBJ/KCBS
11/19/2014 07:53:48 am

Score/Reasons = 9, Nice box of pork! Money muscle looks moist, great color and nicely sliced. Pulled looks clean, moist and great color as well.

Suggestions/Comments = Might increase amount of pulled - not sure there's "ample amount" for six judges. Also add more bark to pulled and balance its display. Great box. Wish I was there!

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
