BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

8 - The shredded looks good but I can't tell what the chunks are, first glance they look fatty.

Ike, KCBS

Score= 9

Great looking box of pork! Pulled pork has a nice color and looks moist and chunks appear to have a nice bark to them.

Good job!

Score/Reasons = 7, looks moist, bad picture, back of box looks sloppy Meat looks well cooked.

Suggestions/Comments = garnish is not helping presentation, put all burnt ends in front of box.

Score/Reasons: 9, Looks very moist and tender.

Suggestions/Comments: Wish we had the ability to taste this!!

Score/Reasons = 9, despite a slight out of focus this is a very good looking and well balanced box. The meat looks very moist, has a wonderful color and a nice shine. The main arrangement shows off a natural pulled look, with a fair amount of bark included. Because the cubes don't appear to be identically sized, they fit right in with the natural look of the pulled meat. I would have liked to be in seat #1 when this box was being judged so I could get first pick.

Nice arrangement and color contrast between meat and bark. Makes me want to dig in

I would judge this a 24. I marked it lower as it looked a bit messy. but as far as bark etc it was 9's

7 - messy - looks greasy.

8....Good bark and color. Meat looks moist Need to close the gap on the front row of chunks or M/M

Add some more meat and lower the sides of the garnish.

Nice moist looking meat! Good sized chunks, like the porky cubes, fine bark.
I think I could go excellent 9.

Tiffany KCBS MCBJ

8 - Love the color on the pulled - but I'm not sure what the chunks are and they look a bit over charred.

Score = 9 Pork looks moist and delicious. Nice distribution of bark throughout the pulled pork.

Photo is a little blurry, but I am giving the benefit of the doubt.

7 - Pile of pulled needs to centered. Chunks should be more uniform.

Larry MCBJ

9 - Nice color, looks moist, I want some..

JohnnyY - NCPC, NCBS, KCBS, CBJ

Score - 8

Reason - The arrangement appears to be haphazard, better organization would increase scores. Burnt ends and pulled should complement each other in the framework of your greenery.

Suggestions/Comments - organized your presentation in a manner that it has a visual flow and appeals to the eye. Remember appearance makes one want to sample your product

Score/Reasons: 9 - beautiful box of pork. It has great color and moisture. Makes me want to dive right in.

Comments/Suggestions: It's not broke, so there's no need to fix it.

Score/Reasons = 8. I think the burnt ends distract from a nice pork entry.

Suggestions/Comments = Ditch the burnt ends or improve their size and appearance for consistency.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks pretty good. The shininess is probably due to the photo.

Suggestions/Comments = make sure the ends are cut more evenly.

Pete KCBS

Not giving a score on the meat but my score on the photography is a solid 3. Photo is so far out of focus it's hard to say much about this entry. I see shiny meat so we know it's not dry but the color is very hard to judge. I guess the arrangement is OK, from what I can tell.

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist (almost slimy) and great color!

Suggestions/Comments = try for more symmetry in placing the pulled in the center of the box (offset to the left), and the chunks evenly across the box. (NOT a scoring factor)

8 - pretty good box. Meat looks very moist with the right amount of sauce. Burnt ends are odd shaped. Greenery looks ok.

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Score 9 Very nice presentation of the pork. Looks very moist and, with the addition of some bark, makes this very appealing. Burnt ends could have been more uniform.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
