BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

9 this is a unique presentation and I like it.

I would give this a box a 7. the meat does not look well laid out and could be more spread out. Color looks good

Wayne KCBS/CBJ
3/1/2015 12:16:20 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Nice options with cubes, slices and pulled. The pulled looks a tick dry and there is uneven sauce and specs on the leading slice. The cubes present well.

Comments - There is some unused space in the box, if you had additional meat worthy of turning in, use it. If not maybe shake out the cubes a little. Not a factor for appearance but the lack of garnish surrounding the pile of pulled does make my eye wander there for a moment. A little sauce or juice could have made the pulled appear moister.

Score 8 The pieces on the left are a funny color. You also can't see the pieces on the right either, but they appear to be shiny and fully cooked. . The pulled looks fine

score / reason 8 little lite in color, money mussel looks good but looks like some are cut thick (in front) and some thin (on the side )

Score: 8

I know, I know; disregard the garnish. However, this layout detracts the eye from what you worked so hard to present to us. Lots of green real estate not being used. Then the upper left has no greens. A little more care and order in your presentation will help to frame what you spent so long in preparing; the meat.

Another blurry photo, cooks are spending their money on meat and smokers and not cameras, haha. It is really hard to judge fuzzy pictures but will do my best.

Standard blur disclaimer: "From what I can tell from this picture..." Score is 8. Meat looks pretty good, layout in the box is a little weird. Having a more full box would have helped.

Score/Reasons: 7. Meat should be displayed in such a way to showcase the meat. There's plenty or room in the box.

Score/Reasons: 8 - A good looking pork box. The meat looks moist & inviting; the layout is just ok.

Suggestions/Comments: Take more care neatly lining up the MM slices, especially the row on the left. I found the soft focus of the photo to be quite distracting.

Score/Reasons = 7, it is potentially a nice box, but it's laid out like it's missing something. Completely distracts from what's in the box.

Suggestions/Comments = Lay it out in complete rows or don't include it. The three chunks look out of place.

9 - Great looking pork box. Appears moist, good color. Very nice.

Could be the photo? Not seeing good color & bark on the pulled pork

I would give this a low 9. I like the overall look, but I think the sliced could have been fanned out a little more to use the space in the box. A little empty on the left.

Score = 7, possibly 8 in person.

Strange arrangement and pulled pork looks dry. Not sure if pork in lower right corner is more slices or chunks.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC
3/2/2015 03:06:53 am

Score = 8, Pork looks OK. Box might look better by taking a couple of the slices of MM from the side and putting them in the front. The arrangement now just doesn't look quite right to me.

3/2/2015 03:42:42 am

Score/Reasons = 9, looks moist and good color

Suggestions/Comments = you are taking a chance with only three MM in the front. Not required to have 6 in the front as you already have enough for 6 judges without the front MM, but why take the chance that some judge will mistakenly score you down for it? (NOT a scoring factor!!!)

7-pulled meat looks ok, burnt ends not dark enough

Jim - CBJ SBN/KCBS

Score/Reason = 8, The meat looks nice and moist but the presentation is odd and was distracting when I first looked at the box.

8 - That blank spot is staring at me...

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
3/2/2015 04:15:19 pm

Score 8. I deducted a point as I do not care for the box layout with the open area in the front corner. When you look at the box your eye is immediately drawn to the empty space and makes one wonder "what has been removed from the box? ". A simple layout correction would improve the cooks score.

9. Looks good, but a suggestion would be to fill the box up with meat if you have box worthy meat available.

8.....Meat looks moist. Even slices. Good color. Nice sauce. Box needs better balance.

Line up the Money Muscle.

Ed KCBS MCBJ

Just OK looking, seems out of balance. Is that cubed money muscle? Interesting, bet it's a good bite.
I'm thinking above average 7, but not by much.

Bob CBJ/KCBS

Score 7 Nice representative samples.

The picture is a bit blurred. Placement of the samples leave a dead space in the box.

Doyle KCBS CMJ/CTC

8 - Nice color, but the presentation needs a little rearranging. Too much open space.

Rick kcbs

9 - Nice presentation, looks moist and not a lot of sauce

Rick KCBS CBJ,CTC
3/17/2015 05:44:55 am

Score/Reasons = 8. Money muscle looks moist, great color and nicely sliced. Pieces down the left side could be aligned better. Pulled looks clean, moist and great color as well. The lower left corner of box being empty looks odd.

Suggestions/Comments = Consider rearranging to present a more balanced, full box. Straighten pieces of money muscle down left side. Might add more bark and evenly distribute it throughout the pile of pulled. Very nice box, not so nice picture *smile*.

7= box has a number of issues. meat is placed poorly, kind of one sided. color looks unappealing, too much garnish showing. meat does look moist, though.

Gregg MCBJ

Score/Reasons=7 odd looking arrangement of slices, I think more bark showing in the pulled and on the slices would help appearance score.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
