BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

While the pork look good, the arrangement seem haphazard. I'd give it an 8.

Score/Reasons = 9, excellent, moist looking meats.

Suggestions/Comments = Great coloring and smoke ring. Right two money muscle slices could be more uniform in layout with other slices, but a very nice box.

Ike, KCBS CBJ

Score = 8.

Slices are a little uneven, but chunks look great. If the dark chunks are bark they look crunchy.

Yum...great looking bark and color, very moist and tasty...9

8
Needs some work on display, fan the slices better

Wayne KCBS / CBJ
4/29/2015 09:28:16 am

Score / Reasons = A low end 8. This is definitely a non-typical presentation with respect to the uniformity. However, the moistness and (meat) color of both the slices and plugs is very appealing. The bark is a little dark, (accounting for the 8) but I can see the cook tried to balance it out.

Comments: I try not to spend more than the usual 15 seconds of direct viewing when determining the score, and the non-typical arrangement might cause some judges to score down if they look upon the entry as a "haphazard arrangement". I'll be interested to see how my interpretation compares to the other judges.

9 - Nice color, looks moist, and I want some.

Note: Some will deduct for not enough slices. I judge what is in front of me..

7 - would rather see placement with smoke side in the same orientation in all pieces.

Score/Reasons: 8 - meat looks awesome. Nice color, gently sauced, great presentation generally. The right 2 pieces of MM were "forced" and actually detract from the appearance. That's probably all they had to work with, but it detracts nonetheless.

Suggestions/Comments: Do your best to have equal slices of MM if you're going to include MM in your box. (Yes, I know you know that.)

Nice box like all of the glissning morsels of pork.

8 - Good color appears moist.

Suggestion: Consider a different a layout. Currently it appears haphazard and random. Show off that pig!

Score/Reasons = 9, exactly what I want to see in a pork box. I want to eat this!!

Suggestions/Comments =nicer arrangement would be an even better box.

The meat looks good, but I feel the arrangement is a little mixed. The sliced pieces are all different sizes, and the bark pieces look a little thrown together. I give it a high 8.

Score/Reasons = 8, meat looks fairly moist (at least spritzed or glazed) and good color, but kind of jumbled in the box.

Suggestions/Comments = might want to make the chunks more bite-sized so that a judge can easily get one out and sample it. Arrange the box better with bark evenly distributed or in one area only.

Score = 9, Great looking pork box. Meat looks moist, the bark has a nice color to it. I would be looking forward to judging this box.

9 - Nice color and presentation Note: Some judges may mark it down because of the bottom row. Pieces need to be more uniform.

Score/Reasons = 7, the box is disorganized. The meat is not placed in an orderly manner.

Suggestions/Comments = take care in placing the meat in the box. The dark ends should be place together and not on top of the pulled. The pulled in infringing on the ends area.

Purty pork! Looks like a 9 to me. I can't really tell if that's a big hunk of fat or gristle in the middle, and if so I'd probably give it 8 instead.

Appearance 6- Pork looks very appetizing, but looks like it was just thrown into the box.

Glenn - KCBS CBJ CTC
5/12/2015 05:42:56 am

8 - the pork looks delicious. Possibly in person a 9 but based on the picture the two right most slices seem much smaller than the other four with the right most "slice" not even looking like a slice.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
