BBQ Critics: Participants in COBJ MUST USE THE FORMAT BELOW WHEN SCORING BOXES or your post will not count toward your COBJ qualification.

EXAMPLE (not pertaining to the box live now):

Score/Reasons = 9, reasons such as nice meat looks moist, etc

Suggestions/Comments = Here you can add suggestions or comments that DID NOT AFFECT YOUR SCORE such as garnish or smoke ring.

Scores will be published as a group when judging is done. Please compare your scores & comments with other judges. If you are way off from the average of the combined scores, take a second look and see if there is room for improvement. After reading comments/scores, ask yourself, "Did I score too high? Did I score too low?" Always look for ways to improve. :-)

Thanks!

Nice full, moist looking box! I look forward to trying all three types.
No reason for anything other than excellent 9.

score/reason 6 color looks a little off just not appealing to me, money muscle looks like it was cut jagged not smooth could be the pic, just an avg looking bow no wow factor here

Score/Reasons = 9, not perfect, but looks dad-gum good to me! Pulled looks a wee bit dry, but overall this is an excellent looking box of pork!

Suggestions/Comments = Looks good - no additional comments or suggestions

Score/Reasons = 8, slices and burnt ends look great.

Suggestions/Comments = Pulled pork looks very yellow? Slices could be thinner

9 - good looking box

Hank CBJ/KCBS

Score=8

Like that the box contains pulled, chunk and slices very appealing to the eyes. The slices appear to be crumbling and not all uniform solid slices.

Score/Reasons = 9, great looking box with moist meat and good looking bark.

Suggestions/Comments = Challenging mix of meats. They need to all be equally good. Looks like they are.

Score = 9

Nice placement and the pork looks tender and moist.

7 - bland - I'd like to try the slices, but the chopped and pulled leave me flat.

I would rate this a 9. Good mix and I like the style of arranging the meat this way. I would be thrilled to judge this box

9 - Looks great.

Score = 9: Nice arrangement. I like the chunks with a lot of bark on them in the box.

Comments: The slices look a little sloppy. If you could tighten them up, i.e. move them closer together. They might look a little neater. That is the only thing that really jumped out at me. Second minor thing is the sauce on the pulled looks a little bit uneven.

7. Pork looks moist, but chunks look to have burnt bark. May score higher if in person.

comments- the glaze on loin pieces seems off a bit, it might just be the lighing of the picture but the glaze seems to have other items mixed it with it

Score/Reasons = 9, moist looking entry. Nice, unique layout.

Suggestions/Comments = As nice a box as there is in pork. Only so much you can do and you did it all.

9 - Nice job on placement and filling out the box!

9 - Very nice looking pork box. Appears moist.

Score/Reasons: 8 - Nice assortment of pork. MM looks great. The others look rather disheveled.

Suggestions/Comments: I know that disheveled can be the order of the day for pulled meat and plugs of meat, but please give some practice time to appearance of what can be disorderliness.

8 but could go a 9 in real life. Pic is tough to tell if some portions of the money muscle are just glistening, or fatty. Looks moist, like bark on chunks, pulled is appetizing too. Want to eat some!

8, looks moist but the color doesn't look that spectacular to me

Pete KCBS
5/29/2015 07:25:02 am

Score 8. The medallions let this box down a bit but overall it looks great. Love the bark and love the golden color, reminds me of that awesome South Carolina style of mustard based sauce.

Wayne KCBS/CBJ

Score/Reasons = 6 The box is rotated 90° from the normal viewing angle, and I do like the general layout with the diagonal row of slices dividing the pulled meat from the chunks. The pulled meat appears dry and bland. The slices appear moist, but contain bits and pieces from slicing and the color is not appealing. Although the bark on the chunks does provide some contrast, it also hides the meat itself.

Comments - You would have received a comment card from me explaining the reasons listed above. Improvements in moistness, color and tidiness would have moved this entry from average to something higher.

8...Nice bark. M/M looks moist and evenly sliced. Pulled and chunks look dry and has a odd yellow tint.

Do a better job lining up the M/M. Make a better frame with the greens so it shows off the meat.

Meat is very inconsistent. The chopped meat in front looks gpood. The meat in the back cannot tell what is going on. The middle meat has layer of fat on it. Give it a 7

8= great looking arrangement of meat, Money muscle shines, Great inclusion of bark chunks, pulled looks good. The pulled and the chunks need a glaze to make them shine like the money muscle.

Glenn KCBS CBJ CTC

8 maybe a 9 in person. Al three meats look lightly sauced and moist. I'm assuming that's "money muscle" on top left. Would love to try with the bark.

Score/Reasons = 9. Great arrangement; excellent symmetry. Money muscle looks moist, good color and nicely sliced. Pulled looks clean, moist and great color as well. I like the "bark pile", for those of us who hunt through the box looking for it.

I would score this an 8 for appearance based on it being a good box but ultimately to get a 9 which is the highest it has to look good and be something that I immediately want to eat.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
