I know that garnish is optional, but the contrast would sure help the appeal to the meat in this box. I really don't think judges are use to seeing many boxes without the garnish and unless they are reminded that it is optional I think this cook is taking unnecessary chances. The pork pieces are great in color and sizing with a nice coating of sauce. I have to try to overlook the garnish issue, but still would only give it a 8.

Nothing spectacular, or anything that makes it stand out.

I'd give it a 6. If the submission is going to include 2 different types of meat preparation (sliced, pulled, chunks, chopped) then I believe there should be enough of each type for each of the 6 judges. The meat looks like it will taste good, but the presentation could be improved. I also agree with another comment here that while the garnish is optional I have seen very few entries that haven't used any at all. If I were table captain for this entry I would have mentioned it to remind the judges of that fact.

Was any thought given to presentation? Giving the benefit of the doubt that pieces were arranged but shifted during the walk-up. Looks a little dry but nice bark. Would be interesting to see scores if the same box was presented with garnish.

KCBS 1 cook and 7 judgings
I give it a 7!
I go easy on appearance but this is just lacking. An unusual looking box. I think I can overlook garnish as I try not to see it anyway.
I just look and cant decide which hunk will be for me and I find myself thinking about how dry it might be. If I grab a mr brown end then I would want a non one and their are not enough for all 6 judges.

Definately below average.

As a suggestion for improvement. Organize the meat so that it does not look like it was thrown in the box at the last minute. Clean the areas of box around the meat so that there is no sauce on the box. The meat does not look appetizing and perhaps some shine would help.

This was a first turn in for pork (before I found this website). Garnish was not allowed. It's interesting how many comment on garnish. lots of good suggestions for improvement in the future.

It appears that no thought whatsoever was given to putting this box together. No garnish, no arrangement, just meat in a box. while the meat does look good, I don't think you deserve a good score if you put no effort into the presentation. winners put a lot into the presentation.

Sauce applied a little thick and unevenly. Nice looking pieces but appears very little planning went into their arrangement in the box. Almost looks like they were just thrown in. If I had actually received this box in a comp I would have sent you a comment card with kudos to have the intestinal fortitude to submit a KCBS turnin box without garnish.

i dont mind the non garnish, however i would ensure that no white shows on the bottom of the container. Nice colour - looks a bit dry. I would also makes sure if there is more than one meat type then put enough in for the judges to each get a sample of each kind.

score 7

KCBS scale, this is a 6
MBN scale, this is a 7

KC, I'm very accustomed to judging non-garnish boxes; I've probably judged close to 600 over time. There's not enough pork in the box. I suggest lining the bottom with pork (good enough to eat), then topping the box with your absolute best pieces. The arrangement is hap-hazzard, and honestly the sauce isnt helping the appearance. If it's MBN, I highly suggest presenting the meat unsauced and put the sauce in the cup provided.

Kendall above is assuming KCBS, which this obviously isn't. It's probably a 5 judge table, and there is enough for the 5 judges.

I would give the box a 5, but on a side note I would love to know what team turned this box in. This team obviously knows how to have a good time at a comp and clearly didn't have a shortage of good drink ;)

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
