Score = 9

Reason = Looks mighty good and appetizing! I like the use of three different "types" of pork in the box. Looks moist and the slices look SWEET.

Suggestions = Watch overdoing the sauce on the pulled portion in the middle. Some of the garnish looks "un-tucked" and can detract from the looks of the meat.

Score = 8

Reason = Not a lot of care taken in meat appearance to make this a choice of execellence. Bottom row of meat does not look that great (could be the photo, but not entirely)

Suggestions = First off, take a more clear photo next time. STraighten out that bottom row. More meat may make this box better lokoing as well.

Could be the picture, but the surface of the meat almost looks like there are sugar crystals or something on it. Meat looks really appetizing except for that.

Yes, there are things that keep it form being perfect, but c'mon guys, if this isn't a 9, what is?

A 9 is supposed to be excellent, not perfect.

This is excellent!

I give it a 7 sauce on top portion is sloppy, messy, and unnecessary.

Pros - I like it when the pork comes with three types. It ensures an all-around accurate idea of how that cook's pork tastes for when that part of the judging comes around. It also just looks so much better.

Cons - Just one and it is the garnish. I don't feel any is needed but understand why it is used. I wouldn't count off for mixing lettuce and parsley (and not doing it very neatly) but I'm not a fan.

I think this box looks Excellent and I would score it a 9.

Solid 8, symetry of the bottom row pieces would be my only fault.

8 nearly a 9
Like the arrangement and variety. Less sauce on the money muscle would be better. Looks tasty!

I'd give it an 8 because of the way the sauce application looks on the pieces in the top of the box in the picture. In real life it may earn a 9.

I'm not judging it down because it's not perfect, but because I think the cook could have done a better job on that one point. Everything else about this box looks great.

Nothing to get excited about. "Mealy" comes to mind.

7 - If the picture quality would have been better or if I had seen this box in person, I probably would have scored this box higher. Even though we are only scoring the meat, the garnish plays a part in how appetizing the entry looks. In this case, I think the granish sort of detracts from how good the meat looks. Consider the garnish a frame for your picture, not a major part of the picture. More meat in the box would have made this entry look better. Also, the slices look a little over-sauced IMO.

9.
I would appreciate more meat in the box and a little less sauce on the money muscle....but still an excellent submission.

Agree with Rob, picture quality isn't helping. Might've been an 8. However, frankly, there's not enough meat in the box. This allows too much green showing and frankly it's distracting and taking away from the appearance of the meat. The sauce appears heavy and gloppy.

The middle and front section of meat looks "greasy". Perhaps the photo exposure.
Garnish overpowers meat but small adjustment in amount of meat in box will help that.

Slices look like they're covered thick with sauce. Arrangment seems odd, almost looks like an "A". So much green in the box, I'd rather see more meat than green but the meat looks very appetizing and I want some!

Score 7. Two different colors with the garnish and three different meats make this box look confusing. The amount of the meat and the layout also make this box look stingy. Money muscle sauce is too heavy and hides the meat.

Sauce on slices too thick and uneven.
Uneven presentation accross bottom.

The pulled has a mushy look. Piece two from the left of the burnt ends looks out of place. Otherwise nice box.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

    Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
