Meat lost in all that "stuff". Cant really see it.

Score = 7

Reasons = looks moist and I like that two types of meat are in the box, but it looks rather sparse. Too much garnish for the amount of meat - makes the meat look a bit less appetizing.

Suggestions = more meat and organize the meat better - it kinda looks like you just dumped the meat into the box.

im guessing this is just for humor. Is that a real turn in? If for real, the contest reps should supply tweezers not forks.

Meat looks outstanding. Only ding is that there is so much more garnish than meat that it looks like a pulled pork salad. That garnish is so wild it's totally distracting me from the star of the show but the meat looks soo good hence the score. Amp down the vegetation and increase the amount of pork and this one would be an easy 9.

CBJ
7 at best probably more like a 6.
Where's the pork? Looks more like a salad. Meat looks decent, just way too much distraction.

Garnish hides what little product there is. Some of the bark is carbonized black - I know it's supposed to be black/brown, but it looks like a couple bites there are gonna taste like charcole

CBJ
Score 1 - looks like it would be DQed for not enough samples.

If not DQed - 7, maybe 8. If you look at the meat only, it looks good. Garnish should help present the meat to make the meat look better. Garnish in this box overwhelms.

I really like the look of the meat. I tried to imagine the box without the garnish ( which is overcrowding the meat) But even when I do that its like the old commercial "where's the beef"
I would suggest having more of the same to fill the box more and less garnish so that the meat is the prime visual.

Score - 7

Reason - There is not a lot there to judge. What IS there looks overdone but still Above Average.

Suggestions - I could have gone 8 on this box if there were more to judge. Could have gone 9 if the bark didn't look like it was borderline charred (which could just be the photo). I personally like a dark and crusty bark but it can be carried too far. Still it looks good and I wouldn't hestiate to grab the darkest part of that bark with the expectation that it was going to be quite tasty.

Where is the meat? Tips look beyond a normal "burnt end" and I honestly don't think that's enough for 6 judges so the score I would give would be a 6, however I think they would end up with a DQ and get all 1's.

Below average. There's really not enough meat in the box to get a good visual on it. The result is the meat seems lost in a jungle of garnish. On the right the bark is a little on the black side and doesn't show off the nice colorations of the meat well. On the left is a pulled glop with sauce... Not appetizing.

Score 7. Pork is buried in garnish and all the garnish simply takes over this box. With the small amount of meat I wonder if all six judges are going to get a appropriate amount.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
