Great smoke ring. The obvious unrendered fat in both areas should have been omitted. It's unfortunate, but I'd give a 6 to an OTW 9 box.

7--This is a tricky one for me, if there was NO garnish I would have given this a 9 or with even showing garnish easy 9 but the little bits showing at the left side top and bottom really distracts from nice looking meat.

Very nice bark. the pulled could use a little sauce, spritz or drippings. It looks dry.

Garnish is an enigma to me. Were you out of greens or did you just not want to take the time to arrange some garnish?

More effort on the garnish and a little moisture on the pulled and I think it is a winner.

Score 8. To improved the appearence of this box I would like to see the colors (burnt ends and cooked pork) mixed together more. Some of the burnt ends mixed into the cooked and more of the lighter cooked pork mixed into the burnt ends to lighten it. Also I would "frame" the meat more by reducing the meat slighlty and showing moore of the garnish.

Crowded, but not crazy crowded so benefit to the cook .

I don't need to "see the garnish" - but when laying out a box it just looks better when it's bordered by garnish. It's more pleasurable to remove a sample from garnish instead of Styrofoam.

Meat looks moist, tender. Would love tt try it. Could have done a better job of placement in the box.

Reminds me how I like things that go pork to be naked.
Very juicy looking without sauce and those MR brown hunks look great and substantial.

6 as is / 7 if an real attempt at garnish was made.

Pulled looks dry, especially pieces on left. Ends are just a mess, no noticable effort on arrangement.

Score 9 on appearance
Would like to see a little more green around meat. I know, we are judging meat not greenery, but if you are going to include it, lets see it on all sides. Smoke ring is nice!!

Very nice looking pork. Neaten up the box, get more garnish in there to help show off the pork's color better and I'd probably give it a 9.

The stuff in front looks like it might be stringy but I can see some fat so it's probably juicy and flavorful.
The chunks in back look darned good even though the picture sucks

Meat looks moist, tender, and apetizing. The garnish is distracting from the overall presence. Its optional so either use it well or don't use it all.

    Purpose

    The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

    The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

    In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

    Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

    Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
