8--at least--hoping it is just the pic that makes it look dry--otherwise

Dry, dry, dry.
Sauce only may have helped.

Weak 9(strong 8), but benefit ALWAYS goes to the cook, so 9 it is.

Could use a little more pop/wow factor to give me the urge to want to grab one...that's what a 9 should do.

Appetizing arrangement, nice bark, nice natural pork color. Only negative is it looks just a touch dry.

Note...I personally like to see some pulled in addition to the plugs & slices but I do not deduct for lack of pulled.

That box is a 9. Great ring, great bark and an attractive presentation.

I'd give it a 7. The meat looks somewhat dry and the presentation layout isn't anything special.

Meat looks incredibly dry. Maybe just the shot.

A little sauce would improve the appearance.

a little more attention to garnish would help as well. Curly leaf parsley tends to dress things up a little IMHO.

I'm going to say an 8 based on the picture, the sliced looks to be on the dry side. Nice bark, nice color, all in all a box that very well could score a 9 in person. And PLEASE don't talk about the un-even garnish - it's a meat contest! :>)

Looks overcooked and very dry. Also, it appears to be more like a ham.

8. Pork looks good, nice color. Tighten that garnish up to enhance the appearance of the meat.

Looks like it's gonna taste great. Great choice for this not so strictly defined category

My suggestion for improvement. Ad some type of glaze or light sauce. This will make the meat look moist and improve appearance. Line your slices up in a direct line. The back 2 slices are off to the left too much and slice 2 from the front is out of line. These are picky points but this is a beauty contest and little attention to detail improves scores. The chunks generally are well placed except the one piece that is extendining in to the 3rd slice. Ask it kindly to step back a bit.
You are well on your way, a few minor details and you will score high!

it has this dry look to it and not sure if that is the pic or not but I like it.

I give the box a 7

Overall presentation of the box is not bad, but I don't care for the "ham slices" look on the right side. Plus you have to keep in mind that when judging the other 2 categories it's a cumulative score of both types of pieces so if one piece is a 9 and the other is a 5 you will end up with a final score of 7.

I like the pulled pieces on the left, but would include the money muscle only as a 2nd choice and not a thick full slice.

3, this is some the wrost pork i have ever judged. im not sure i would eat it. it must have been over injected with some thing. i would never buy pork like this in a store.Good pork is not that color after cooking..

8 - Very Good.

Presentation is good.

Appearance is dry.

I'm borderline 8 to 9, so I guess that probably means a 9.

This looks very appetizing. Slight hint that it may be dry, but frankly I doubt it.

The color is awesome. The bark looks nice. This may be over-smoked but that'll show up in the taste category.

Yea, it probably gets a 9 from me on this day...

Aside, because I dont regard garnish, but I think this gets a SOLID 9 without the garnish. In this case it's getting... busy and in the way.

Might just be the photo, but it looks VERY DRY!!! No shine at all on ANY of the meat! I like the idea of slices and pulled with bark; however, it just doesn't look appetizing to me very much.

7/8

1) The meat looks dry, but this could very well be the picture. This is the reason for the 7/8 score.
2) I know this is not a garnish contest, but if you are going to use the garnish please finish the box. You did a very nice job of framing the meat except for the top right side.

To me, these two keep the box from being a 9 in appearance. The chunks and slices look good with a nice smoke ring. I'm ready for a bite!

This looks like good smoked meat. Kinda looks like it might be dry but since I can see fat in the slices, I'm guessing it's not. Box is well balanced. with chunks and slices taking up the same amount of room. Garnish looks good. No sauce so I bet this team knows what they are doing and their meat tastes great without it.
I judged some pork this year that looked a lot like this and it was utterly superb.

Score 9. Excellent box! The meat has nice color, a great smoke ring, is not over sauced and just looks great. The only addition might be to balance the meat in the left rear corner, but the meat may have shifted during the handling also.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
