Looks nice and moist, great color, appetizing bark, properly sauced, attractive presentation. I am concerned that the portions at the top of the box may not be completely separate. 8

8. That chunk of meat on the left looks fatty, and lay the money muscle down a little so the meat and smoke ring is visable. Get rid of the fatty, and fan the MM and you'd get a 9 from me.

Better than average, but now much. Not all that appealing to me. Center chunk of pork looks like it has a big piece of fat on it.

Had a hard time with this one. Looks tasty!! But, looks like there is some fat on the middle-top plug and I like to see the money muscle laid out not sliced but whole. I'd like to have a chunk of that with my morning coffee.

Looks pretty appetizing; however, could be arranged a bit better. I don't dislike the "loaf" on the top, but the chunks on bottom almost look like they were just thrown in the box without much thought. Also, I like to see a box where each judge can get a sample of each type of meat entered - meaning, that each judge gets a slice and a chunk - but that ALL the chunks are similar (not some with bark and others without).

As a picture, this one is haphazard. My suggestion for improvement. If you are not going to sauce all the chunks, then don't sauce any. Saucing of 1 and a bit of another is not pleasing to the eye. Top left chunk is out of place with the others. The membrane that is showing should not. Turn that chunk so that it looks like the others, minus the sauce. These small adjustments would rate this box an 8 IMHO.

Bottom portions look "thrown in" and not organized. Not sure if I should take 2 samples - one from top and one from the pile on the bottom. Might be a weakness of the photo, but the presentation is confusing.

6 - Too much unrendered fat staring back at me and the lower chunks are just "thrown" in the box.

6 - Average

1. Chunks look dry and unappetizing
2. Presentation of chunks not good.
3. Too much sauce on slices

Score 7. The box just doesn't appeal to me. I believe it is the way the sauce was gooped over the meat and the placement of the meat. A beautiful job on the parsley and a poor job with the meat.

I've looked at this sucker for two days and I want to give it a low score cause of the odd piece on the left. I'm a known fat lover but that piece looks weird. The sauce has that shiny fake look to it but if not for the odd piece, I'd go 9 because this just looks good. The bark looks amazing, like crackly skin. I'd like to see the muscle pieces seperated but as they are still together our samples have a better chance of being warm which would be nice for a change. It looks good and I want some for Christmas please.
Can't wait to see the other scores. At first glance I was going to score this low, a 6 probably but after closer inspection I'd darn near give it the 9. Garnish, which I care not about, is perfect.

If going by the definition, this is below average for a restaurant as well as a competition, so: 5

All sliced vs. pulled which to me indicates not done. The money muscle looks more like feces IMHO than a money muscle. Taper the MM. Mix in a lot of pulled pieces as well as cut/sliced chunks if you like cut/sliced.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
