Nothing special. Average. Some sauced, some not. Looks like no thought was given to building the box.

Score 7
Are those slices or massive muscle chunks? Very large pieces are not that appetizing. If those are slices turn them so you can see them. It could use a little shine, looks kinda dry.
Even out your garnish up the sides of the box.

According to KCBS, we are not to judge the garnish - meat only,

6, probably a 5 but I'll give the good cook a benefit of doubt.

This box looks like NO effort was taken to make and does not make me even want a piece, sorry!

Looks like some shine to the pieces on the left side? That's good.

I give this a 6.

Reason: It looks like a mess in a box with no time put into it. The larger cuts are way too big. With these bigger cuts all you will get to taste is the smoke and no rub if they even put any on it. Another words you have no burnt ends. The sauce looks uneven. Looks like the pulled pork is doused in sauce and the larger cuts are just sprinkled in sauce.

Suggestion: Cut the bigger pieces down and make the box more uniformed such as putting pulled pork in middle and bigger pieces on outside such as a matted picture.

P.S. the color/freshness of your garnish looks great and placed nicely.

cbj/comp cook,7 sauce is uneven and the meat looks kinda dry.

I would give this box a 6, the left side of the box appears sauced very little while the right side appears to have no sauce and looks average for the appearance score.

I say a 6

Some sauce some not? that beg tongue looking hunk. I accept alot of things but just no seeing this as anything above average.

6---looks average at best although in person maybe better--trying to decide if the pork is tender or not is tough from a pic

Kevin - CBJ

6-7. Nothing outstanding here to warrant higher than a 7. Sauce is uneven and spotty. Not much (if any) bark.

Kevin - CBJ

7 - The chunks of pork are different sizes, with some small pulled in the upper left, and a big dry looking hunk 2nd from the right. There's some nice color in the box, but it looks uneven and not great overall.

Samples are uneven - i.e. If I really like the look of the saucy piece on the left and it's taken by the judge before me I'm disappointed.

Try to provide 6 consistent and excellent samples.

What, pork that looks like pork? What is this? LOL. A little more bark, a little nicer lines, etc. it gets a 9, but a nice large chunk pork box.

Tim W. (KCBS CBJ)

7 - above average

Pieces are not uniform in size or sauceing.

A very odd presentation with the long chunk strips. There looks like there is a little pulled in the top left. While this might have tasted good, it is not an appealing box. It looks like some judges would have had samples with sauce and others without. Hard to tell how much is in there though.

6, it looks like the cook just threw the pork in the box.

Dan CBJ/Chef

6, it is ONLY an average box, and not even a very pretty AVERAGE box, PRESENTATION< PRESENTATION<PRESENTATION, judges eat with their eyes FIRST, make it look good and have 6 pieces of EACH cut of piggy and it would have a chance, a 6 is the most i would give unless i could see in in real life

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
