I really like this, the combination that is. I might be concerned that there aren't clearly 6 equal portions, I think it's made up for with the choice of pulled vs. sliced.

eight--the pulled/shredded in front looks 'mushy'--needs some separation/definition---slices look very good

I would give this entry a 7 on eye appeal. The symettry of the slices isn't pleasing to the eye and pulled looks unappealing. Maybe the photo isn't doing justice but the pulled looks like it isn't sauced and looks dry.

SCORE/REASONS.....7...Pulled pork is mush and unappetizing.

SUGGESTIONS....If you feel it is necessary to put the pulled in, build a bed of it and lay your slices on top.

Difficult one for me. Almost looks like brisket slices. This threw me but in the end it looks great and I really want to take a bite. Tenderness might be another story but since this is appearance only solid nine.

8. Pretty good looking box of pork. The back 3 slices look real nice, but the front 3 slices don't look quite as appetizing to me. The pulled pork looks ok.

Suggestions - go for some smaller slices. 3 judges are going to get real nice slices, and then it goes down from there. I had to crank my head around looking at the picture in order to view it the way the judges would have at the comp. They don't give you side views there. It was almost as if the cook wasn't expecting slices of that size and just fit the pulled pork in where they could.

7 Looks tasty, but upper slices look a little dry. Color is nice.

I like chop in a box, but I like to see pulled meat better.

I would suggest that you try to use slices that are similar in shape and size if oyu are going to show sliced meat. Perhaps spritz if necessary to avoid dry appearance, and use chunks or pulled along with the chop.

8/ MEAT LOOKS OVERLY SHINY TO MEAT INDICATING THAT IT MAY BE TOO DRY. ALSO BARK IS WET AND LOOKS GREASY WHICH MAY HAVE SOFTENED THE BARK

Fantastic bark on the slices. The pulled looks great. No sauce and I'll bet this tasted like really good smoked pork. From the drops on the box, it looks like they just doused it with natural juice. That probably soaked in by the time it got to the judges.
I like the arrangement.
Other than the little bit of juice pooled up on the front slice, this is perfect to me.
Question for BBQ critic: Would that be something we should deduct for in this forum? I'm assuming and pretty sure that liquid would certainly drip off by the time the box made it to the entry table, much less to the judges. The slices would not be nearly as shiny when they were judged and probably looked perfect. The team would plan it that way.
But the picture we are looking at would have been taken a few minutes before it was actually judged. I probably would not deduct anyway. Just looking for clarification and always wanting to improve as a judge.

Hi Scott, That decision would be entirely up to you. The box isn't violating any rules, so you must decide if the meat is appetizing to you or not.

As for me, personally, I would not deduct (based on what I can see in the photo). In person, ya never know. The photo here was taken just before turn-in, so you are right. Pretty certain things would shift in the transportation of the meat.

I would sure like to take bite of those slices! The pulled, however, do not look that appetizing to me.

7 - Reasons for score: The slices look awesome and extremely appetizing. The pulled on the other hand, looks extremely unappetizing. looks mushy and oversauced. If the slices were the only thing in the box I would have given this an 8 or 9.

Suggestions: Maybe go with some chunks instead of the pulled.

9 - Looks great. Two types, pulled and sliced. I want this box for myself. Not too much sauce.

Interesting layout. Box as presented is sideways but meat is placed properly if box were oriented with lid on top. Very nice presentation. A bit more even glaze on the rear slices and a light houskeeping on the edges of the box would score a 9 from me.

I'd give it a 9. It might be a 10 if I saw it it person and the slices were more uniform in size. Nice, moist, tasty looking meat.

Hard to say what it is but its missing the WOW factor of a 9. I think its the first front 3 sliced pieces are crusty in parts and intrudes into the meat. Could very well be the pic but very front piece looks like grease on bottom of that piece. I suggest brushing out that a little. Makes me think you did not let the meat rest before cutting into it.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
