6---just doesn't look that appetizng

I would give this a 7. While the sliced portions look ok and the chopped is presented ok, it doesn't jump out to me.
I assume that the sauce is very light or the meat has no sauce. That makes me think dry...
I would suggest even portions with something that says I am moist and juicy."

Totally unappetizing. Not looking forward to tasting it. Looks like some of the pork was put through a meat grinder.

7- This picture is from the side and I don't think that it would present as well if shown from the front as is normal.Don't like the single piece of bark on the pulled kinda looks like a spider. The pulled looks kind of like small chunks and has little color or bark added. Not very appealing to me.

9 baby
I'll bet some dog this for fat in the slices. Not me. Look at the amazing bark on this stuff. Give me the 3rd slice from the left and leave me alone. Big thick juicy slices are perfect looking. The chopped does not look quite as appetizing but I will not deduct for that. Sauce would be fine but in this instance, no sauce tells me that these guys/gals know what they are doing and this stuff tasted as good as it looked. Sure would like to know what this scored for taste.
Suggestion: Keep up the good work!
Question: BBQ critic, when teams submit these pictures, do they tell you what the scores were? It would be cool to know how some of these boxes did for all categories

BBQ Critic

Scott - scores are collected on the cook submission form and yes - some cooks do provide the actual contest scores. However, I am reserving these scores to be used in the BBQ Critic photo book (cooks that say "yes" on the box submission form to allow me to put their box photo in my book will be published - if chosen).

The scores will be compared to the BBQ Critic Online Judge Scores. That's only time judges will "compare" as far as competition boxes go. ;-)

This pic is a side pic of the box. Not sure if this is how you want the judges to view it or not. The bark looks a little dark. Also the pulled looks little dry. Don't like the one burnt end on top of pulled. My eyes keep focusing on that part.

Suggestion: Mix the pulled section little better and put little sauce in there. Beaware of how you are placing the meat in the box and which way you want the judges to look at it.

A generous 7. Meat looks undercooked. The slices have a lot of fat in them, and the pile of meat isn't chunks or pulled it is broken apart bits or balls of fatty pork. It looks chewy to me.

Suggestion - how about no more SIDE VIEW pictures? I'd like to see and judge the box the way the judges see it at the judging table.

SCORE/REASONS...9...Lacking a little shine, but I think that's just the pic. Nicely displayed box.

COMMENTS....After all judges have scored box for appearance, and this meat looks as white in person as it does the pic, I would have the TC get the Rep and see if he thought this was a pork loin. That's his call.

6 Sorry to be so harsh.
THe reason is it looks dry and unrendered at the same time on those front hunks. 3rd from left. That back pile does not look pulled but like it went through a meat grinder and then was patted into a lump.

I like the fanned layout of the slices but it's uneven. The pile of pork looks like it was extruded not pulled/chopped and the random piece of bark atop the pile seems totally out of place. It just doesn't look like something I'd like to sample. It might be the picture but it looks a little try. Perhaps a spritz of apple juice before closing the box would help boost the moisture.

6 - Nothing special about this box. I'd need to actually be there to prove it's not loin.

Suggertion: Please take pictures from the FRONT of the box. That's how it's presented to the judges table.

Might be the lighting in the photo, but sliced pork looks dry. Nice bark formation though. Personally, I think the box would be more appealing if pulled pork was used rather than the chopped.

This gets a seven from where I'm sitting, but I might go an eight if I were looking into the box. I like the uniformity of the slices but the meat looks dry. Again, it may be due to lighting and camera angle.

I'm a fan of bark - but not that much. The first slice there has too much IMHO.

Add one more slice so I know I'm gonna get one with just a sliver of bark and this is a 9

Score 6. There is no appeal to this box what so ever. The meat looks washed out and dry. There is no color to the pork. This just is not a box that gives me any part of a WOW factor. It could possibility just be the picture and for the cooks sake I do hope so.

meat looks dry. A little glaze would go a long way. Slices are uneven in thickness and non semetrical placement. The frame of this meat is missing completeness although I am not judging the garnish just the overall picture.

6 box is not appetizing. The meat just sits there dry looking. The pork needs some glaze and perhaps better presentation.

Score = 8
Reason = Looks pretty good - maybe a bit dry, but lacks that "POP" to make it excellent.
Suggestion = ???

7 Would have like to have seen a moist look to the slices.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
