Although I really like the layout of this box, the meat looks extremely dry and the color is not appealing

9 - composition, selection of product, overall apearance, nice bark, moistness, all combine to make an apetizing presentation that makes me say "Wow"....

not sure what the wispy white material is at the lower left corner of the first slice..

Score: 6

Meat looks soggy. I am not sure if that is sauce slathered over the slices of meat or grease. The first slice looks fatty at the bottom tip. The chunky pile of meat does not look appetizing.

Suggestions/Comments: Even the sauce/grease out on the slices. Replace that first slice with a better looking one. Fix the chunky pile and put a little bark or someting in it. On a good note I do like the layout of the box. Its nice and I never seen that before.

marginal 8. Obviously some time taken in prepping this box. Something about the surface of the slices is drawing my attention, like it is not cleanly cut. I'm not sure what is being presented to the right of the slices but it doesn't really appeal to me.

SCORE/REASONS...7....No shine/wow factor, just doesn't look that appetizing.

SUGGESTIONS....I'm guessing you have never been in the judging tent? If you have, you would understand that after the box is handled a few times, you are probably gonna have some mixed product with your lay out....just a thought.

Where's the bark pieces, some judges think they are the best tasting.

9 - Pulled, chopped, and sliced. Well presented box!!!

I don't know what that strange coating on the slices is (sauce?) so I'll side with the cook. Just ensure the pieces/spices are 1/8th or less.

7 The chopped looks like dogfood. The pulled looks like something worse. the slices look like they have debris on them. Kid agreed.
I had my 14 yr old Daughter look and she is a good scorer and felt the same about the slices and piles.
I would suggest to cleanly slice the meat and show more bark.
Loosely pile up the pulled and chopped. THe separation line looks very nice to me.

s/r 8,i like the slices, not over sauced, you see the meat,

s/you may have cut the pieces a little better, looks like you used a dull knife.

8--slices look 'dirty', and pulled seems 'wet'---actually a very nice way of presenting

Looks pretty dadgum appetizing to me! Not really sure about that sheen on the first slice, but I think it is just the photo. I definitely like to see all three "types" of pork in the box. Might hurt when judging taste/tenderness, but gets my vote on appearance.

The texture appears a little less appetizing then I'm used to, but the pulled and the overall appearance is good

7 on first look. Nice to have three selections to judge by but sometimes that can bite you as well.

Nice presentation but a little dry looking

8-sliced has some discoloring and looks dry or like it was sliced with a very dull knife. the rest looks great

I was thinking 5, and the meat itself is a 5, but the arrangement is clean and neat so I'll err up 1 point. The meat in the upper left and lower right appears to be pulled and chopped mush. Mush to me isn't appetizing, not even on a sandwich (which this is more a barbecue pork plate category). The slices, good job feathering those, but... The appearance just isn't appetizing at all.

Love the arrangement, like the meat. Perhaps a bit more glaze/sauce on the sliced increasing the appearance of moisture? I'm not a fan of chopped...it looks extruded or already chewed to me....but I think it works here. Nice box here.

Pulled pork looks good, but sliced pork is sauced sloppily. Chopped pork looks like kibble. What is this new fascination with multiple pork presentations? Pull it and be done with it. The more ways you display it, the more open it is to criticism.

Looks a bit dry, but really nicely arranged. Nice presentation of sliced, chopped & pulled. I'd give it an 8 based on this photo, just for the arrangement.

This box is a heartbreaker! I absolutely LOVE the layout. It grabs my attention and draws my eyes to each section and then...OMG, did they use a chainsaw on the center pieces??? Whether it's the roughness of the slices or the light or who knows what, but they look like dried up pieces of coconut husk. I really don't mean to be harsh, here, but you deserve my uncut feelings because this box could be a no-brainer, flat-out nine in appearance - if it wasn't for the way the center pieces are cut. Please get a sharper knife and do this again and again. It will be beautiful. Until then...the most I could go is seven.

I would judge this at an 8 for appearance; the slices look a little rough, but it could be the photo too; pulled pork looks good at the top, bottom right is chopped pork? Bark looks great, would like a bite now...

Score 8. This box is very attractive, neat and very well laid out. I only question why the sliced pork edges looked to be rough cut? If this would look different when I actually viewed the meat I would give this box a 9.

9 - Excellent

Some judges may get bent about only five slices.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
