7. No real wow factor here, just a pile of pork. Good mix of bark and meat.

Nothing bad about it, nothing great about it. Tad above average.

Score: 7

Maybe a tad to much meat in the box. Also think it would be better if it was mixed together a little better so you can spread some color around, Good job on the garnish, it really brings out your meat.

This is how I turned my first pork box in. I am sure you are very proud and it tastes great but the bar has been raised in pork with an entry almost needing some slices and pulled.

7/8,i like it because you can see the meat, not over sauced. but it

lacks that wow factor to make it a 9.
s/ in todays contests i dont think you are going to score high scores with a pile of pork..pork enties have move past that.

Pretty average. Just doesn't jump and scream "eat me" Good color, plenty of bark, looks moist.
Need "Smell-a-Vision" here

7 - Looks a little pale, a little dry under the sauce. No "wow" factor for me in this box.

Kendall - CBJ

I'd give it an 8. The meat looks moist and tasty but there doesn't seem to be much more to the presentation.

7 - Above Average

Meat looks good, but not stellar.

Garnish is no help.

the picture as a whole looks anemic. I would suggest some color on the meat or a lot more bark showing to break up the white.

Scott CBJ/KCBS

I would score this a 6. I like that there's lots of bark to sample and the overall amount of meat is appealing. But it does look like the meat was not placed in the box in any kind of order, messy. Not that I expect a perfectly placed pieces in the box but some order would improve the presentation.

7-- I would like to see a more symmetrical pile. Not sure I like what looks to be strips of bark without much meat attached?

7 - Above average.

First look meat is plentiful appears a little dry and over cooked.
Doesn't appear that there was any rub or mop applied before or during cooking process.
score 6

Score 8. Nice looking meat and I like the fact that the cook used only one type of pork, did not oversauce, and added bark meat for more color. If more contrast with the color was added I think this box would be a nine. Possibilty a darker garnish would help.

7, looks like no thought was given, meat just thrown in the box. Nice bark on some of the pieces, too much uneven color.

Jean KCBS CBJ

This is an 8, pulled pork looks appetizing, bark looks good, does not look dry; I would like to taste it, just does not scream a 9 to me.

Randy Stewart

Score: 8 I like the mixed bark and pulled pork, not shredded, not too saucy, looks like nice thick pieces. Meat is clearly on display and is very appealing.

It may be the pic but the meat look pale and mushy. It looks nice and moist but the garnish is covered in the front of the box. A little less meat would have made this box look nicer overall.

I'm not a fan of the pile o'pork presentation. A more organized approach may boost scores. That said, the meat does look appetizing and I like that the meat looks like meat. Maybe a touch more moisture?

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
