7 to 9
My apologies for hedging, but it's hard for me to tell if this is dry or not. I like the symmetry of the layout and also like that the pulled is not sauced while the slices are. This allows me to taste the plain smoked pork and also the teams sauced product. Nice bark on the slices. It just comes down to the overdone/dryness factor which we could easily ascertain in person.

7, maybe 8 in person. Pork looks pretty good. The very top piece of the sliced - not sure what's going on with that. It's pretty ragged, maybe an end piece? Pulled looks pretty good but could be improved with the addition of some bark.

Score: 9 - I like this box. The meat is very well displayed, pieces and portions are uniform, meat looks juicy with good looking bark. I almost went with an 8 because I like to see bark mixed in with the pulled pork but decided that the bark on the sliced money muscle side was good enough. Nice work.

8-real close to 9, the meat looks just a little dry, money muscle in front cuts imply it's dry; the display is really good, bark looks good, I think a mixture of pulled/slices is a great way to display.

THe pulled needs some more bark for me
THe slices are to thick for me and I dont like the red paint on it.
If you do have to paint it then the front 2 slices should have been covered also.

Score: 8

I would give a 9 but few reasons why not. 1) The top sliced piece just seems out of place to me. Cannot tell if its burnt ends or a slice. If it is burnt ends then you do not have enough for all judges to try. If it is a slice then make sure to show the flesh of the meat like you did with all other slices. 2) The bottom slice does not look like it has sauce but all other slices do. I would make sure that they all have sauce or they all dont. The judge that is going to get that one is going to have a different taste than the other 5 judges that get them with the sauce. The slices that do have sauce I would brush it out a little more and more.

Comment: Your garnish looks great. Its not over garnished and gives your meat a nice bed to lay on but still lets the meat be star of the show.

eight--looks good

more care with sauce/glaze on slices would help

7 (Above Average) Slices look off a bit, tough to explain but the whole box looks "flat" or "ho hum" to me. The box just does't celebrate the meat. I'm wondering if in person this impression would be different so it gets a 7.

The meat looks dry, even tho you dabbed the top of the slices with sauce. The shredded outweighs the MM.

Almost perfect! The sauce/glaze on the slices could be just a little more even on the sides of the slice, but this box gets a 9 from me.

Score 9. I cannot determine what is in the back of the sliced pork, it looks to be a bad slice, but not being able to actual see the box I will give the cook the benefit and therefore a nine. A little more bark mixed into the pulled for color would help, but this is a good looking entry.

score 6, uneven sauce on the slices and they are very thick. The shredded pork looks very plain

9 Love this box! Ready to dive right in. Meat looks juicy, arranged attractively to show off the meat.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
