5 KCBS CBJ looks thrown in the box, uneven or no sauce, looks like there may not be 6 pieces of money muscle in front

seven--looks just ok

6-7, doesn't look appealing, too much sauce, no organization. KCBS rules might DQ this box if the marks are unique (can't tell).

I'd give it a 7. The meat looks tasty, but there's nothing really special about the presentation.

Can't tell if there are enough slices? If there are a definite 8 / gloppy and front right upper piece looks completely dry but I would surely like to try those chunks they look great! If not a 3 to learn to put enough in for every judge.

Sloppy job on saucing, but the bark does look good

Suggestion: Give the box a more arranged look, this might mean less meat so the different types are more obvious

Nothing is more regional IMHO than pork. Down here we call it "pulled pork" because pretty much you dont want to see sliced, cubed, chopped, etc. That aside, the size of the chunks look good. The sauce appears as though it's over everything and starts to take away from the overall appeal. Is that a big glob of translucent fat on the left? Lets get that out of there, whatever it is. The bark looks nice and not too dark except perhaps a chunk or two in the back (could be flash). I like that you filled the box; that's a good thing. It does help.

6 - Average
Presentation seems haphazard with little thought.

Recommendations:
Perhaps use pulled pork on the bottom and setting the slices and chunks on top in some orderly fashion so that the judge can quickly determine what they are looking at.
If there isn't any pulled in the box, arrange it a bit more to seperate the types of cuts in the box.
Perhaps less meat in the box could help with the differentiation of the cuts. KCBS only requires 6 samples, FBA only requires 8. If you do put more then one cut type in the box, be sure to put the 6 or 8 of each type so the judge can taste both cuts.

Bark looks excellent!

6 - I don't see much effort in this presentation and wonder what was sprinkled over the pork.

this is not an attractive box IMHO. Looks like the meat was just dumped in the box without thought. The saucing is spotchy.

I would give this a 6; I think there are slices up front, but only see 3; If these are all chunks, they are too big; the meat looks moist, good bark, but not appetizing to me.

The meat looks good! The arrangement, not so much... I just can't tell if there's enough of each type for all six judges. I'm going to have to say seven on this one.

generous 7. Nice big box of pork, but it looks over sauced and the color doesn't appeal to me. Then there's the one piece in the box that doesn't have any sauce on it toward the lower right corner that draws your attention. Then there's the glob of translucent material (fat?) on the very left bottom third of the box.

Box is nicely filled...no negative space.
But, some bark is very dark, maybe burnt. While the arrangement does seem to have organization it comes as sloppy.

Score 7. Even though most of the meat has nice color one piece on left side looks like a piece of fat. It may be the photo and seeing this actual box could slightly change the score. It also looks like this box was thrown together with lots of chunks and only three sliced pieces? We know that garnish is not judged, but it would add contrast to this box. My suggestion to receive higher scores would be to put garnish in the box, place only one type of meat into the box ( either slices, chunks or pulled) and choose the meat wisely and carefull place it into the box.

Looks kind of appetizing..good barky pieces and larger chunks (which I like) but the sauce seems uneven and haphazard. It may be the photo but the sauce also has a weird orange color that is a bit of a turnoff

Score: 5

It looks like a box of take out. Put some care and character into the boxadd if itsits going toto be judged. Nice smoke color to some of the pieces but to much sauce covers it up.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
