Score: 7

Halo to the Lord of Charred Pork. Sorry that is what comes to mind when I see it but I kind of like it. I would have given this a 6 because the bark looks way to charred but I could tell you put time into this presentation so I bumped it up to 7. If bark was not so charred (looks like to much sugar and not overcooked is the problem) I would bump it on up to 8 possibly 9. Wish the halo ring had a little more color in it but thats ok. On side note your garnish looks great.

9 - Excellent

That is, assuming the box is legal. At what point are "designs" legal?

Bark looks fantastic, meat looks moist. I would love to get a try of this entry.

9--original, meat looks great, overall design seems to distract from nit picking. Lol I might steal this!

I would drop it a point for lack of bark in the pulled but you have used it all up.
Looks very good and yummy.

Only problem is I think it will be DQ for marking

The arrangement doesn't appeal to me - and I'd probably have the table captain question the "marking" aspect of the rule here.

score 6, is this box "marked"? looks more burnt than bark. Pulled pork looks moist

Kevin - KCBS/CBJ

6 - The shredded stuff in the circle looks dry, the bark looks really burnt. I would ask for a Rep's ruling on marked box or not.

DQ - That's sculpted meat.

I think we got a little too fancy and it takes away from the appearance and appeal, IMHO.

Watch though, there are going to be comments about the 4 (or 5) piles or barky pork not being enough (I can see it now...)

Kendall - CBJ
2/27/2012 01:02:54 am

When I first looked at this I wondered if it should get a DQ because "Meat shall not be sculptured, branded or presented in a
way to make it identifiable." and this presentation fairly unique.

If that were not the case then I'd give it a 7. It looks too dark, almost burnt, and make me think it's overcooked before I even taste it.

Hey table captain, is this a DQ for the meat being put in such a strange pattern? (and obviously recognizable to a co-conspirator)
Anyway, the pulled stuff looks OK but the corner chunks look like charcoal

Deb/KCBS CBJ

Score-8. Looks good enough to eat!

Bill CBJ KCBS

1 That looks like a design/pattern to me

Basic Patrick (KCBS cook & cbj)

Clearly overcooked and unappealing hard bark. The dark red under the bark is another sign of overcooked and the pulled look like it's "probably" approaching mushy.

6 (average)

I like new ways to present meat. This one looks very nice

8 for the meat, but I am not in love with this presentration. Looks like a bird's nest. (which I don't find appetizing)

Score 1 , appears to be scuplted, I confir to my colleagues

Smitty - kcbs cbj

1. I'm going with a 1 because this looks like the meat is sculpted. If this doesn't fit the definition, then I don't know what would. If by some wild chance it is legal, I'll give it a 7.

Dick - CBJ

Score 8. Box is interesting, but also confusing. Are the dark pieces sliced or more pulled? If they are slices they appear to be very unequal in size. I sure this would not be a concern if I was able to actually see the box and might also score it a nine in person.

Big AL - SLBS CBJ, SLBS/KCBS Cook

The arrangement is different but not appealing to the eye. Bark on chunks looks a little too dark in spots. The pulled looks tasty.

I applaud the effort. Perhaps filling the circle of pulled with plugs would be easier on the eye? A little less sugar in the rub or changing up the wood choice could brighten the charred look of the bark.

Jean K KCBS CBJ

8- bark looks good on the chunks, pulled pork looks good; be careful of sculpting with this type of box...

Randy Stewart
2/27/2012 10:49:53 am

Score: 8 - Assuming it's not DQ'd for being shaped like a flower, I like the creativity and the bark on the pieces looks inviting. The pulled pork looks a little too saucey to me. Otherwise, a good looking box.

Tom - CBJ/KCBS, MBN, NCPC & Comp Cook

For strictly appearance I'd have to give this box a 7. But I'd also question the legality of this box, as it appears that it could be interpreted as "marked" or "formed" in my opinion. The black bits just don't look very appetizing to me, while the strings look moist and good.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
