6 = Average and that is giving some credit to the cook. This just does not look like BBQ. Pink doesn't look like smoke to me and no bark at all is not appealing. Crock pot pork is what it looks like. Really "hammy" look doesn't even have me looking forward to tasting it and I like oven pork.

Score: 8 - Meat looks juicy and inviting but I don't see any bark so I deducted a point. I'm assuming the meat is done but I've never seen pork this color throughout. Interesting box.

Boy.. could really use more light on this one.

Look nice, moist. Due to the light, can't really see if it's Sliced or Pulled.

7-8. Hard to tell with the poor quality picture. All that pink makes it look like a box of ham.

suggestion - get some bark in there for some contrast.

Score: 7

No WOW factor but has nice color and looks moist. I probably would score higher if you worked on presentation a bit.

Can't tell from the picture but it looks raw to me? No Bark if it is not that underdone the most I would give it would be an 7. The meat looks really moist but cant tell if its moist or raw?

7 - Above Average.

Looks moist. Well balanced in box.

Color is off-putting. Maybe photography?

Not affecting score, but wondering why no bark at all?

Would like to see some bark and purpose in the box design.

7 I would like to see some bark and sauce to accent the meat

This box doesn't do much for me. Looks plenty moist, but is just a pile of meat. Poor photo doesn't help either.

the quality of the pic isn't good, but this looks like an 8 to me; if i could see more of the bark, I'd give it a nine; full box, color is PINK, but I think it's the picture; meat looks moist, good size chunks.

It simply doesn't look appetizing.

I can't honestly judge that. It could be turkey thigh however, the fat needs rendering a bit.

7; this is a situation in which the picture may not be doing the meat justice. However, there is too much "sheen" on much of the meat and it's hard to tell if it's fat or not. I assume it isn't. Also, the color of the meat suggests it's not cooked all the way. Again, I assume it is cooked just fine. That's why I give it the benefit of the doubt.

cbj/comp cook, prolly a 7 maybe a low 8 I'd have to see it in person to be sure. The meat looks good but I like to see a little bark in the box and maybe have the money muscle cut up nice in there too. This is average to above average to most of the boxes I see when judging.

8, looks very good, but is missing something, bark? sauce?

Good-looking box of pork. Appears moist and juicy.

I like the size of the pieces and the layout. However, it looks like "oven barbecue" to me, not as appetizing as it could be.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
