6. Not an appealing presentation. Looks dry, sauce looks unevenly applied.

It looks like they took one person's portion and cut it very unevenly into eight pieces. (Maybe because that's all they could salvage?)

6 not very well shown chunks only not a good box

I like bark, but this might be just a little too dark- hard to tell in this shadowy photo.

The black on the bark lower left makes me think it's gonna taste like charcoal. That and the pulled kinda looks on the dry side.

Leave that burnt end out maybe?

As always - it could be the picture.

9 - Bark!! Bark!! Bark!!

7 maybe an 8, looks like it stayed a little too long on the smoke. The pulled pieces look to be a little dry.

8 or 9, looks very good, might be a little dry, but overall I would like to taste it

I like the top section of meat; looks good but dark (probably displaying too much bark and not enough inside).

All I can say regarding the bottom section is: IMAGERY

Not good.

Score 7. Too dark and just not appealling entry.

It could be a regional difference but I'm not big on this layout. All I see is bark, which looks good, but I can't see the interior to see if meat looks moist or dry. I also don't care for the tube look of the money muscle.

This might taste fantastic but to me it just looks OK.

Score: 6

Meat looks to dry and charred.

Comments: To much of your garnish is over taking your meat.

8 It just doesn't grab my eye. If it had a bit of a shine it might be a 9. I wish I could see more non bark meat.

Score: 9 - Really like the bark color, innovative placement, and the different pieces for a pork box. Would love to grab a chunk of that pork.

Sauce looks burnt on and the meat looks very dry...not appealing at all

6 = Average

7 just average for me. Sauce looks to be spotty , little bark missing in front right . and for me box looks kind of empty

9, maybe a little to much bark.

My initial reaction to this box was even LOWER, but I gave some credit to the cook and looked at this meat again. Looks charred/burnt to me. Looks dry. The money muscle and the pulled chunks look too similar - both have chunks the same size and are burnt. As a cook I would NOT have submitted this box!

That's the best I can do given the picture quality. This stuff looks burnt

8 did not like the presentation so much, but the meat itself looked very tasty and carried the score.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
