7. Lots of white chunks in the middle, might want to mix in some bark there.

Holy Barkbiters, Batman!! What a great looking pork box. I know they misted it. But this does not look overcooked. Nice chunks and plenty of bark. No sauce so this team knows they got the goods.

Garnish? Wee don' need no steenkeeng garnish!!!!

Good bark, but nothing spectacular. Doesn't make me want to grab it and start eating.

7=above average Meat looks dull almost as if it was steamed. Some look dry, others not. Just a color issues here for me.

Side note...This may be one of those boxes that shows us just how much the contrast of bright green garnish enhances the colors and overall look of meat...most of the time.

see no garnish can look nice.
the large hunks only over some pulled is starting to appeal to me more and more.
not to much sauce. just a hint. The mr brown ring of fire looks delicious. that hunk in lower right side is mine!!!

The meat looks dry to me. I like all the burnt ends though

Score 8. Nice looking meat, but just not the wow factor to give it a nine.

That's some good looking pork; nice and juicy-looking, and it is standing on its own merits with no garnish to get in the way.

I'd give it an 8. The meat looks moist and tasty but the presentation could have been done a little better.

9, looks moist, even chuncks, would like to taste this one.

9 - Excellent

One of the best looking pork boxes I've seen.

Looks pretty appetizing and moist. If there is money muscle in the box I can't tell, as ALL the meat chunks look the same (with the exception of bark).
Suggestion: If you do have MM in the box, separate it somehow to delineate the difference. As it is right now, I'm grabbing a piece with bark and a piece without. This may or may not mean that I am grabbing a piece of MM.
While garnish is NOT required, it usually makes the meat stand out better and helps the visual presentation (especially if done right).

Missing that wow factor. Meat is moist, but no real presentation to it. Seems to be simply piled in the box.

7 - above average

Non-symetrical placement without a wow factor

I like boxes without garnish, but this one isn't working for me. The way the chunks are arranged takes away from the appetizing nature. Also sliced chunks, to me, is a turn-off.

7, not impressed, meat looks ok

Tough one. Bark looks good. Moisture seems to be adequate. I'm not a fan of the arrangement...it's looks chaotic. Also just having one type of meat (all chunks and no slices, plugs or pulled) doesn't wow me. On second look I think my score may be unfairly too low but that's my first impression.

Josh KCBS CBJ

8 Some of the chunks look stringy. I think it might look better with the chunks just all tossed together instead of having the bark pieces surround the box.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 9 - nice looking box of pork. Chunks are arranged with meat side up in the middle and bark side up on the outside, very appealing. Meat looks juicy and delicious. Very nice.

8 - chunks look moist, great bark, full box; would like to see some slices, but can't wait to bite into these!

The meat looks tasty, but the arrangement is too...heavy. I'd say in this case that "less means more", and I'd go an eight on this box.

8 I like where you were going with this box. You must have run out of decent barked pieces to put on the left side and top of the box. I would have nined you if you had completed the idea. The meat looks moist and tasty. This is a great way to frame the meat without using garnish. Nice. I would try pulled in the middle some day.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
