8 - This pork looks tasty and may have scored perfect if a bit more care had been taken with arrangement. I'm going to assume that the very dark bark is going to impart only smoke and not a burned flavor.

7 It looks dry and unorganized. I don't think using the 2 different garnishes looks attractive either.

very light and refreshing box. I wish all 6 chunks had bark like the 4 that do. Border patrol will help.

Niether pulled meat or burnt ends look like something I want to eat. Ends dry and pulled a mushey pile. 6

Box looks like it was thrown together in a hurry way to scrambled for me would go no more than 6 or 6.5...

Score 5 I rarely judge below a 6, but the pulled meat looks dry and probably overcooked and the cubes look burned and not at all like a good bark.

6. The pulled pork looks dry. Some of the chunks also look dry. 5 of the chunks are heavily barked and one appears to have been scalped and is bald. There's an errant string of pulled laying atop the upperleft most chunk. This has a hastily thrown together look about it to me.

cbj/comp cook, 7 or 8 closer to 7,the meat looks dry and the box looks kinda thrown together.I wonder if they were racing the clock on this one?

Score: 7 - Bark on the chunks looks very good, arrangement is a bit in disaray, pulled pork looks a little dry but can't really tell in this picture.

I'd give it a 6. Presentation could use work.

5--not at all appetizing--dry

Not enough meat...bark is wayyyyy too dark &looks tossed in there. My score is a 7

7 maybe 8 in person
I like the stuff on the left but can't overlook the haphazard arrangement pf the chunks on the right. I normally just grade the meat and pay only small attention to the layout.
Why so little pork in this box? 6 chunks and there is barely enough of the pulled for 6 judges

Looks dry. No more than was put in the box must have meant that was all that could be salvaged

7
Pulled side looks good.
The chopped side meat looks good, however doesn't look like much thought/planning went into it. A little better arrangement would help a lot.

The piece of bark in the pulled pork makes me think maybe this arrangement didn't come out as planned.

Advice: Make the two presentations distinct - keep the bark on one side and the light colored pulled on it's own side, maybe using garnish to keep this presentation clear.

Doesn't have that appealing appearance to me. Chunks should be lined up or staggered or something, not look like they were just thrown into the box. Chopped/pulled is too inconsistent and looks a bit dry. Using two types of garnish is distracting from the meat.

Jim Harmon - CBJ KCBS/SBN/SCBA

6 - there is too much garnish and not enough meat; the pork looks like it was thrown in the box, although the attempt to highlight both bark and meat is apparent.

7 - Pork looks good but the box has no BANG to it. Better arrangement and more meat would help!!!

6. Meat looks dry. The appearance of the meat in the box does not appeal to me.

suggestion - the parsley thrown in the bottom on top of the lettuce doesn't do anything for the appearance of the meat. Fill the box with a pile of pulled and a pile of chunks. Even if the meat isn't moist, it needs to look like it is.

While the meat looks pretty good, the presentation is very sloppy. With just a little more precision, this entry's score could have been higher.

7. The meat looks tasty but the presentation seems kinda thrown together. I would have tried to get more uniform looking burnt ends also.

7/8, box looks a little skimpy, too much decoration and the meat looks like it was just dropped in haphazardly.

Kev B / KCBS CBJ

Score: 6

Burnt ends look to charred. The pulled is several different sizes. Box has no organization at all in regards to presentation.

Comment: Do not like what you have going on with the 2 different garnish types. Took me a minute to focus but I kept looking in the middle of the box and see the burnt ends look like they were thrown in there. Take a little more time with presentation.

Hap-hazard arrangement. Looks like just thrown together. Perhaps a LOT more pork in the box would help. Also, a few pieces of the bark look extraordinary dark taking away a little.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
