8 - Pretty nice, the chunks in front look kind of messy. It just doesn't pop for me.

Score 7 I would like to see the inside of the slices.

8 The chunks look good, but the slices look real dark

This could be a 9 - but the presentation doesn't POP for me - hard to explain or advise what to change. Maybe shuffle the money muscle a bit - show the interior cooking of it... show me the money

Good presentation. 9!

7 - No wow factor.

Suggestion: Fan the MM out so we can see the meat. Maybe some pulled to take more space in the box so there's less green visable. Remember, we judge meat and more is better.

Would prefer to see some pulled or chopped to get an idea of the versatility of the butt. 7 is the best I can do..

Jim Harmon - CBJ SCBA/KCBS

8 - There isn't a lot of meat in the box; the chunks look appetizing but it's hard to tell whether the other meat is edible because you can't really see it.

The chunks in front look pretty good. I would really like to see the money chevroned out but must assume that the meat looks good based on the chunks. A view of part of the money meat could make this a 9

Something like this can be tough. The pulled meat looks nice, appetizing, and appears as though it's going to be moist and tender, a nice mix of bark and non-bark, and the bark itself is really appetizing (not too black). Then of course there's the sliced turd up top. As my wife says: Ewe. I'm going to focus as much as I can on the bottom portion.

Score 7. If all of the meat in this was the like the chunks in the front of the box it scores a nine. It was a big mistake putting the large chunk of the unappealling dark money muscle in this box. It looks like something my dog left in the back yard.

8 - Good looking box of pork even though the muscle in the pic is a little dark (just the image I hope). Two types in the box -- wouldn't mind seeing (and tasting) some chopped as well. Those chunks have some good looking bark and look moist and smoky and tasty.

Smitty - KCBS CBJ

7. good job on the chunks, sliced looks dry, end piece on the right is too big, can't see the meat of the sliced.

John

8. The box looks OK, but it doesn't 'pop." The pieces at least need a thin glaze to catch the light. The chunks in the foreground appear to be 'thrown' into the box. A little order would help.

9 - Nice presentation. I would look forward to trying that pork. I can tell just by looking at it that it was awesome.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 - Nicely arranged and slices are uniform. Chunks look juicy. Color on the slices looks a little dark, otherwise, I'd have gone with a 9.

8. a tad dark on that money M.. I wish you would have shown some more moist meat. If one of those M slices showed the side and looked moist a nine

Just doesn't look too appetizing to me - too dark! Chunks look pretty good, but MM looks dry.

8 Tastee looking bark, could look a little more moist, makes me want to take a bite

9...looks very good...maybe set the muscle a bit higher as it looks small in the box...I really like this one

Score: 7

I do no like how the chunks are placed. I think they could be a little smaller and more organized. Could be pic but the slices look a little charred.

Comment: Garnish looks great.

Robert - KCBS CBJ/Comp Cook

8 - The chunks look good and appetizing, but the slices not so much. The money muscle looks like a big lump of char. If you are not going to fan the slices out, add a little more saucy shine to the them or maybe cover it up earlier in the cook so it isn't so dark.

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
