7 - Decent bark

Presentation doesn't look as planned as it could be - not so much "thrown in the box" as it isn't "arranged to please the eye"

Score 9. Great entry of pork. No other comments are necessary.

Score 8 I wish I could have scored higher, but to do that I would have to see some of it pulled and maybe sliced. The chunks look good to me, but it needs more eye appeal.

Probably good looking pork but way over sauced. Nice bark. Box could be better managed. Add more meat. 7

8, possibly 9 in person. Everything looks good, but I feel like there's room for improvement overall. Hard to tell much about the meat because so much sauce.

Nice pork box. I'd give it an 8.

7. The meat is too saucy...is it hiding dry meat. Can't tell from photo but may be able to tell in "real life." Also, a full box makes a much better appearance than this skimpy submittal.

Is that a big glob of fat in the middle right?

7 - No wow factor, just a box with meat thrown in.

Definitely over-sauced!!!

Jim H - SBN CBJ/KCBS CBJ

8 - I'll give the benefit of the doubt on this one! There is too much sauce so it's hard to gauge the meat. But, I know it could appear differently in person.

Stephen - CBJ/KCBS

8 -
(The Good) The chunks look very moist and are perfect one-bite pieces. Most of them have some bark and the bark/non-bark pieces are evenly distributed.
(The Bad) The placement of the meat is uneven, you should fill up the top and right sides, especially the upper right corner. The meat appears a little oversauced, especially on the non-bark parts in the upper left corner. The big chunk on the bottom row, third from left looks best for sauce amount.
(Other not factored in score) The inside edges of the box should be wiped clean. There is one piece of lettuce at the bottom that is much lighter than the rest.

Maybe 7 in person. Just no pop to this one. Would like to see some chopped/pulled or slices instead of just chunks

Very nice but too much sauce doesn't let the natural pork shine through.

Frank - CBJ

7 - Nice looking bark. Sauce appears a little heavy. With this style of presentation I'd like to see a pork box with a little more meat.

cbj/comp cook, 8 a little too saucy otherwise would have been a 9, nice amount of bark too.

I like pulled pork chunks like this has, BUT there's just soooo much sauce it's just not as appetizing as it could be. A little less sauce, perhaps a box more full of meat, and this is an 8 or a 9.

Chaz D CBJ

9 A lot of folks might give you a hard time for over-saucing but it looks good enuff to dive into to me! This is one of those boxes that makes you anticipate getting to the tasting portion of judging.

    NAME FIELD ON FORM:
     State name/CBJ Organization (i.e, Tom - CBJ/KCBS). CBJ=Certified BBQ Judge

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
