8. keep the sauce even, watch the surface defects. Bottom 5 are skinny ribs, top are wide.

Wow. I see the little dent on the left rib and I know the ones on the bottom are not even cuts but who cares. Look at the color of those babies!. Golly! Please give me some ribs like this to judge next weekend. Please!!!

I say the box top must have touched or meteor?
Some will say not straight cuts or same width. I do only wish I had two views. cause we need a side view.

There are 2 maybe 3 ribs that I don't see how they could have any meat on them they are so skinny. But those should be extra I guess
Otherwise it is a good looking box

nine--nice looking ribs

Score 8. Nice ribs and this box would be a nine except for the small ribs the cook placed behind the nice ribs. I would suggest the cook place only eight ribs in this box, make them of equal size, cut the same as the top ribs and this box would be a nine.

Lots of benefit to the cook based on the angle of the picture - in person I'd be taking a look at the side

The cut isn't as appealing as some others I've seen. The presentation is sort of missing the "Ribs" opportunity - hard to describe, but these don't pop out as separate portions as much as other cuts - and part of what makes a rib so awesome is the portions.

cbj/comp cook,8 or 9 I would have to see it in person to be sure, looks good.

9 - Possibly oversauced and I can't tell what that black spot is on the left rib due to the flash/picture. ` Benefit of doubt goes to the cook!!

Score: 8
Very well laid out presentation, but oversauced or it would have been a 9.

I'd give it a 7. The ribs on top are all equal in size but the ones underneath are not.

7 or 8. uneven cuts a few very thin ones in the back. Nice color but black spots on the right really jump out

9 - Excellent

Some concern over uneven size, but not enough to take away.

Not perfect, but very good. The finish has a day-old-pizza look going on....

Either the perspective must be off here or the bottom ribs are 3/4 the width of the top. This give the presentation an odd, out of balance look for me. The bones looks superb...good color. I want to take a bite. If the perspective is the issue, this gets a 9.

Randy Stewart KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 - Nice looking box. Ribs are cut cleanly and placed evenly in the box. The color is a little lite and there's a little too much sauce for me or it would have earned a 9.

9 - ribs look uniform, meaty, great color!

Because of the odd rib sizes in the box I couldn't go higher than an eight. That big, puckery blemish on the left-most rib really detracts. Yes, I'm being picky...

8 Very good looking ribs. The dark char spots held you back.

    EMAIL FIELD ON FORM:
You must be a "registered" BBQ Critic Online Judge in order to judge boxes on this site. Proof of registration is your email. All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
