Certified BBQ Judge
SCORE: 9

I see no issues. Looks great!

I like to see the cut sides, but based on what is visible, I would give it a 9. The ribs are of a uniform size, the glaze is attractive and appetizing and as a frequent TC, there are more than 6 pieces. Only kidding on the last one - that didn't enter into my score.

CBJ

8 leaning 9

chin bone angle (top takes attention off ribs) in the future select more even top or trim to be even) draws attention to uneven thickness of two bottom ribs

ps remove the piece of I assume parsley in bottom right corner and water drops in front

Dan

overall 8

Reasons: Many different sized ribs
Appears that 2 different racks were used.
Front 4 heavily sauced back 4 not so much.

I am a Mstr judge and KCBS Rep...

9 I would be able to see the meat on the side if in person...good looking presentation...

would score it 8...nice initial view
good color and size of ribs

KCBS Certified Judge

Score = 8

I would appear that these ribs were taken from several different racks. The back row is especially un-uniform. Saucing looks like it is uneven.

I like to see the sides with a smoke ring.

A score of 9 is hard to earn without taking care that everything is perfect.

I am a Master BBQ Judge

Score = 8

Needs more uniformity. Not as perfect as it could be. Otherwise, not a bad looking box. The ribs look tasty.

Can't get much better than that for appearance!

I am a Master Judge and I would score this box a 9. Looks good!

I am a CBJ and cook.

Solid 8, maybe 9. Actually, at the judges table that would probably be a 9 since I don't have time to pick it apart like I can with a picture :)

Now to the picking...

Garnish edges are uneven (yeah, i know we're judging the meat, but a sloppy frame takes away from the overall look)

The ribs look very appetizing. I want one, and that's what really matters. The cuts are a little rough and not all are straight, and the jagged edge represented by the back layer of ribs takes away a little.

Overall nice job!

I give it an 8.

The third lower rib on the picture looks a little messed up as if the brush missed it...

How many judges actually have the time to stare at a box before scoring?

Seriously, in the few seconds that you are SUPPOSED to be given, do you notice water drops, uneven sizes, different racks??????????? Seriously????

If so, then you'd be great as a TSA agent. LOL

Pics posted online are under much more scutiny than in real comps, I hope.

Personally, I'd score it a six....the garnish on the left and the right are not symetrical....and we know it's all about the garnish. Right?

CBJ for 10 + years and BBQ chef.

Give it an 8.

Looks great but I would turn the bones up.

I'd say 8. Yes, I am a certified kcbs judge and cook. Initial Thoughts? I like seeing bone up vs down - although the bone is visible. Greenery- looks like a big blank hole in the front, but greenery is there. Color of ribs is nice, shape is nice, symmetry is there. Nice box overall, but the garnish could look better and for some reason the bone down does not appeal to me. The greenery could be better all the way around.... Build a mice putting green and fill in the sides - make it POP! - but they look tasty!

KCBS RULE:
Judging on the appearance of the meat only. Only an inexperienced (or bad) judge would take the appearance of the garnish into account.

CBJ and compete more than judge. Ribs look GREAT...9. Toss the green and the ribs are STILL a 9. WHy??? I am judging the rib category, and these ribs are a 9. I know about framing, and maybe that could HELP a poor rib turn in, but if the ribs look like this why take a point because of ANYTHING else in the box???

Bill Gage
5/16/2011 01:38:36 pm

Okay cooks....now you get to see why you get the scores you do....

"garnish is not symetrical"
" the third lower rib looks messed up"
"cuts are a little rough" ( from a cook)

C'mon get real....how does it look....stop picking the fly shit out of the pepper.

I would say 9, as soon a I looked at the pic I wanted to sink my teeth in the ribs and see if my eyes were correct! I have 2 years judging.

Ron
5/16/2011 02:30:31 pm

@Rita... The garnish is part of the box and, whether we like it or not, it will affect the impression that the meat makes. It is like the frame on a painting. Having the proper frame complements the painting. having the proper garnish complements the meat. until KCBS eliminates the garnish why take a chance on losing appearance points because of it?

(Sorry, I'm not sure if comments on comments are allowed :) )

Herb

@Ron - You are perfectly fine responding, Ron. Bottomline - judges will score down if a cook places beautiful meat on messya garnish in a box. Why would a cook expect anything different to happen?

Personally, I think KCBS should eliminate garnish if they Really WANT TO MAKE IT A MEAT CONTEST. :-)

Brian

KCBS CBJ

Score: 8 based on the pic but a good chance I go 9 in real life.

In general I'm looking forward to eating these. Because it's a pic I can't tell about the two ribs on the back right nor what is really going on with the rib in center right. It could just be angle or lighting messing with the pic or my eyes, so in a real competition I wouldn't have those issues and could easily be a 9.

CBJ and BBQ Comp Cook
I appreciate all of the comments and love to hear the scores you all would have given me in most cases. Now to hear a little about the ribs in the box....The front 4 are from the same rack and were sliced side by side, the rear 4 are from the same rack but the bones were way crooked. I had to slice them at an angle and in order to place them straight, I had to sacrifice the angular look for a straight presentation. These ribs scored 7/9/7/8/9/7 I did have a 7th place walk in ribs, but I think I could have done better with this group. Thanks for the critique and feedback. Thanks for this site, Herb!

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
