Score 6, Ribs not symetrical, could be trimmed a little better
some burned spots maybe just sauce

7 Ragged uneven look, particularly the piece on the left.

Left hand rib looks like the end of the slab....ribs are dark, maybe overdone. Score it a 7, mabe an 8 in person.

7 - A little dark and the left one looks dry.

7 - Looks ok. Does not look as appetizing as it could because of the darkness in some areas of the meat.

7 - Uneven cuts, gloppy sauce, and charred/burnt look hurts this box.

Looks over sauced. Sauce is unevenly applied. Rib on the left looks like its been cooked on the side. .......6

7 - Love the "less is more" appraoch to sauce. But, ribs appear too dark, maybe even charred, and edge meat looks dry.

Score 9 These could very well be the winning ribs.

Ribs look burnt and unappealing. I'd give this box a 6. Wouldn't be looking forward to tasting these ribs. Also looks like rib on left side comes from the end of the rack. In my experience these pieces could be drier and lack the tenderness of center cut ribs.

suggestion: sauce is not smooth, rib on left looks dry

Nice full box. I like the character of meats finish, it looks like it would be very flavorful.
Widths of ribs aren't very similar. The left side rib appears to be a end piece, not that great for looks but pry would be the best tasting.
Above average 7

7. Maybe higher in person. The sauce or rub looks clumped and too dark in spots. Different sizes on the side ribs mean the last two judges will get a different experience than the first four. I'm picking one of thos larger meaty looking ribs.

Tom KCBS MCBJ

Irregular cuts, broken meat second from the top, rib end cut. Need to think about cooking more than one rack at a contest or not cutting thm in half before cooking. 5

Dan KCBS MCBJ

wide variation in cuts a 7

Scott A. KCBS/CBJ

6 or 7
Too bad they don't all look like the front one. I'd sure like to taste it. The rib on the left destroys this box. The others are also very uneven. The one in front is twice as wide as the rib on the right side.
I hate giving low appearance scores. These mighta been 9's in the other catagories

You're killing me!! Ribs LOOK great---I want to try----- meat score 9
I do not like the lay out. You have big hollywood cuts in the center and thin narrow cuts on each side. presentation low 8

John R

I'll go with an 8.
Inconsistent size. Side ones look smaller.
The side left doesn't match the others for saucing. Maybe a touch dry?
Nice shine to the others though.

Score: 7 - Ribs are placed uniformly in the box but seem overstuffed, color is a bit dark and sauce is blotched up, pieces are not the same size, overall above average box.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
