7 - These are nice looking ribs but for the rather ugly looking bones staring the judge in the face. Figure out how to camouflage or hide those bone-ends, and you'll have at least an 8 box and maybe a 9.

6 - Looks overcooked and the sugar has burnt.

Score 6. These ribs appear to be overcooked, oversauced and then overcooked some more. Even the bones appear dry. Again absolutely no appeal.

8 I like the look, this is just a dig in and eat presentation, I bet this is moist and tender.

Not very appealing to me. Ribs look way too dark and overcooked. 6, possibly a 7.

Nice box, ribs look like they have good color and are smoked well.

6. - May be higher in person. Ribs appear dark and a couple clearly look over-cooked. Slicing style is not the same for each rib (see top left versus bottom left).

Long burnt bone ends. Uneven cut. Looks like they were chewed on before the sauce went on. All a round bad looking ribs.....4

Ribs look very dark. Photo makes it hard to see them clearly. From what I see, this box is a 7.

A 6. Look moist and even color but no uniform sizing and bottom pile mostly hidden from view.

7 This box would be a solid 8 without that upper right rib. Also, the meat is noticeably left of center in the box.

7 uneven bone display, ribs look borderline burned, rib widths uneven.

Pretty dark, huge pullback indicates it might be way overcooked.

8 - Uh oh. They look overdone based on that upper right rib. As in falling off the bone overdone. But ya know what? They also look darn tasty. I'd be on these like a hobo on a ham sammidge. They look like some dandy eating. Unfortunately only very good and not excellent in presentation for competition purposes.

These look really dark. It could be the pic but the meat has pulled back on the bone a lot. I like it but with the dark color these could be overcooked I like a double cut but they need to be a bit more uniform. 7 Comments are closed.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only. SUGGESTIONS: Feel free to offer any suggestions on how to improve the box (keep separate from reasons why you scored the box). You can mention anything here such as garnish suggestions. Purpose
The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE. In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example). Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner. Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad. Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-) Archives by Month
