Photo makes these ribs look bad. The color is not very appetizing. Color is also uneven. Nice presentation though. I'm giving them a 7. Might be much higher in person though.
12/21/2012 01:39:41 am
Wish I could see the sides of these ribs. Looks good so I'll score it a 9.
12/21/2012 01:41:34 am
8. May be higher in person. Photo overexposed which is detracting from the visual appeal.

7 - I find the pebbley grain top surface offputting...it's like the sauce curdled. Also, the couple places where it appears the bark is missing and was then sauced over, is distracting.

6 Rather pale look, not appetizing.

Nice color, nice texture. Pretty good cut lines. A little more care in placement would even out alignment to create the "slab" look.

Score 6 - The only unusual thing about this box is the color.

8 maybe 9, I like the look. The only drawback I see is the lack of garnish on the right side. To me the right amount of sauce, very little.
12/21/2012 04:34:27 am
score=8 the ribs are even but you can't see the meat, could use some color

7, different sizes, not appealing looking

9 - but only because we are not suppose to judge the greens. If I was at a competition it would have been a 8. Maybe a little more green to fill the sides on the container. Otherwise, I like the slight angle of the ribs. Might try this myself in my next competition.

9 - Nice color and not too much sauce. Careful with the brush strokes and the uneven space on the left could have been made during transport. Nice box!

9 - Nice color and not too much sauce. The spacing on the left could have occurred during transport and I use to be very critical about spacing until I was enlightened by two KCBS MCBJs with over 400 events under both his and wife's belts.

9 - Nice color, nice presentation, looks good enough to eat!

An 8. Nice layout, good knife skills, look moist, even color but light brown tint not eye appealing
12/24/2012 03:01:05 am
7 or 8, leaning towards a 7. The ribs do not look appetizing due to the grainy look of the rub or sauce. Looks like brush marks where the cook was trying to layer the sauce.

8 The look like there is a crust on the meat. Hard to tell from a photo, I would like to try,

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.
The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.
In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).
Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.
Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.
Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
