9 ribs look great good job cook and helper!

Dan KCBS CTC/MCBJ

Just looks average,7

Bob
1/6/2013 07:38:17 am

Score 7 - I wish I could view a side of a rib.

Jim H - CBJ SBN/KCBS
1/6/2013 07:51:44 am

7 - There is too much sauce on the ribs and the rib in back on the right is noticably longer than the other and isn't trimmed well.

BlueSmoke KCBS CBJ/COMP COOK

Heavy, uneven sauce. Brush tracks all take away from the appearance score..............7

Rebecca
1/6/2013 08:06:21 am

i give this box an 8.

John - KCBS/MCBJ, CTC, Rep; MBN & MABA Judge

7 - To me, this box has an overall general raggedy appearance to it.

Sully CBJ 3146

7
would like to see the side view of at least one rib.
if your going to use a brush that leaves brush marks
then brush the all in the same direction.

Paul KCBS/CBJ
1/6/2013 09:15:51 am

7 - inconsistent color/trim and brush strokes.

Lorne Rae
1/6/2013 09:19:51 am

A 7. Nice color and look moist but top pieces extra large compared to bottom ones and look roughly cut. Bottom pieces too hidden to judge.

Frank MCBJ
1/6/2013 09:54:20 am

6. Ribs appear oversauced. Suggestion: Neaten up the garnish, work on the knife skills, try to choose ribs that are similar to one another, try to eliminate the brush marks. Take a look at some of the other high scoring presentations on this site for examples. This will bump your scores.

Doug KCBS MCBJ & CTC

Nice meaty ribs. The color and size is a little uneven though. I'd give this box an 7, above average.

Ike, CBJ/KCBS
1/6/2013 10:37:29 am

Ribs aren't uniform. They also look a little burnt. Too much sauce. 7

Paul KCBS CBJ
1/6/2013 11:03:10 am

I'd give this an 8. The sauce is a bit too much, the brush strokes do not all go the same way and the ribs are not all close to the same size judging from what I can see in this picture.

Bill F
1/6/2013 11:31:11 am

7 Well okay, these 6 could be from six different sides? I want to see 6 ribs obviously cut from the same hog.

Glenn - KCBS CBJ
1/6/2013 12:00:54 pm

Ribs vary greatly in color and size. Sauce looks uneven and the garnish looks like a jungle-7.

Dick-MCBJ/CTC
1/6/2013 12:25:17 pm

Score 7. COOK, why did you need to put a heavy paste (sauce) on these ribs and cover up a great rib??????

Ed KCBS MCBJ
1/6/2013 12:27:35 pm

The gloppy sauce full of multi directional brush marks on the mismatched sized portions just scream average.

As I always find something good to say.. your box is nice and clean.

7-8 like the color,size.looks a little dry.

Kendall - CBJ
1/6/2013 01:10:30 pm

I'd give it a 7. There's a little too much sauce on them.

Larry MCBJ
1/6/2013 02:28:29 pm

7 - Oversauced, uneven cuts, placement, and the garnish detracts from the meat.

Chaz D. Kcbs cbj
1/6/2013 10:11:08 pm

At first glance this is an ok box but when I looked closely the ribs are cut pretty unevenly and they have a close to burned look on either end. The sauce also has very obvious brush marks. In competition prolly a 7-8

Fred KCBS
1/6/2013 11:27:53 pm

Nice looking box wouldn't mind trying one of these 8

Greg MCBJ/KCBS
1/6/2013 11:44:38 pm

score=8 meatcuts are uneven

Tom - CBJ w/ KCBS, MBN, NCPC & comp cook
1/7/2013 12:54:09 am

7
LOTS of meat, but ribs are too dissimilar, uneven coloration, uneven saucing, and appears to be rather heavy on the sauce. Still, looks a bit appetizing.

JohnnyY CBJ/NCBS
1/7/2013 01:15:45 am

7 - pieces are not uniform. It is a good idea to select ribs from a particular section of the rack that offers the best presentation. This way, when they are presented they look like complete section of the rib rack.

Bill cbj kcbs

Ribs look dry

Mercy KCBS/CBJ
1/7/2013 02:13:14 am

Appearance looks a bit uneven. Nice color. 8

john kcbs
1/7/2013 02:36:08 am

Score: 8; uneven color, too much glaze (seems to be running off lower center piece)

Greg-. Cbjkcbs
1/7/2013 05:30:44 am

9 - those ribs look very meaty and tasty

Gerard
1/7/2013 06:48:14 pm

7 I like the way the ribs are cut and stacked so the meat really comes out of the box. If you would have cut the ribs more equal and payed attention to the direction of mopping on the glaze (now you can clearly see there's been glazed in two directions) I would have given it an 8

Tony CBJ
1/7/2013 11:45:50 pm

8 ready to dive in.

Shawn
1/8/2013 09:03:38 am

I would give this an 8. Color looks perfect! Sauce is a little much and can see bruch marks, but the meat stand out of this box great!

Tom Epler, CBJ PNWBA
1/9/2013 09:27:41 am

8, lack of uniformity, and too much sauce. The front ones look like winners, the back, the leftovers.

Bill C. KCBS MCBJ/CTC
1/9/2013 02:07:40 pm

8. Arrangement and portion size looks akward.

jaja01
1/10/2013 02:12:47 am

7 The ribs look dry and it appears the top layer of meat might come off with one bite. The size of the ribs is inconsistent.

Dwain
1/10/2013 04:07:27 am

6. pieces are of different sizes and the center piece front row looks like more sauce than the other five. Looks like a rush job. Just not put together well.

Scott A. KCBS/CBJ
1/11/2013 11:19:59 pm

7
Golly, horizontal brushstrokes on one and vertical on another. These might taste great though

All registered judges are required add their email to the email form field. Emails are kept private and not published. If you do not list your email, your score/post will not appear on the site.

SCORE/REASONS FOR SCORE: Score this entry and give reasons for your score. DO NOT mention garnish or smoke rings in your reasons for scoring. We judge meat only.

    Purpose

The purpose of BBQ Critic's JudgeMyBox section is to provide feedback to competition cooks. Certified BBQ Judges who visit this site will score the photo of a contest box (using KCBS judging rules) and may optionally leave a comment explaining their score.

The idea is to allow the cook to get inside the mind of a judge (judges do have varying opinions) so they can use this information to help improve scores on APPEARANCE.

In turn, the BBQ Critic editorial team will provide feedback on some judge scores and commentary  that stray from the KCBS rules. This will help our judges become better judges and keeps everyone on the same page. Judges may also encounter some fun challenges at times (click for example).

Comments about boxes or judges scores may be discussed in our online FORUM in a respectful manner.

Please be mindful that scoring photo boxes may not be as accurate as scoring the box in person. Lighting, glare, angles, etc may affect the overall score. Judges also have more time to stare at your box, so that means we may get very detailed about the good and the bad.

Have fun, judges! Oh, and cooks? Please send us your boxes. We love to judge Q here at BBQ Critic. ;-)
